(More customer reviews)I was looking for a solution to install a mount for my iPhone in my car without using a 12V outlet (inconveniently located), without mounting on the windshield (no good spot on my windshield that doesn't seriously block the view), and without spending ~$100 on a ProClip product. I thought this Bracketron product was the answer, because it was 1) Cheap, 2) Customizable 3) Secure.
However, for a variety of reasons, this product has failed to be even somewhat useful:
1) The metal bracket is REALLY tough, and you are gonna need some serious tools to bend or cut it as directed. The picture on the back of the package (not shown on Amazon) depicts someone bending it using just their hands and a single set of pliers, but I was unable to do anything even remotely precise enough with 2 sets of good vice-grips -- forget about getting a good clean bend. I imagine it would take proper steel-working equipment to manipulate the bracket with any precision, and if you've got that equipment you can probably just make your own bracket. I didn't try to cut it, but again, the tin snips they show on the package wouldn't stand a chance. (As a side note, even my not-strong-enough vice grips marred up the black finish badly -- I'm not sure how anyone is supposed to manipulate it without destroying the finish.)
2) Despite the promise of endless customization, I was unable to find a good place to mount it in my car, even after several hours taking apart all the dash panels to look for a good bolt spot. Not really the fault of the product, but be sure to confirm that you have a good spot to put it before buying. I was forced to settle for a very awkward position down by the glove compartment (which didn't even work because I couldn't get the bracket in the right shape).
3) Finally, even though the metal bracket is sturdy, the plastic mount (i.e. the part that you actually see and touch) is cheap and flimsy. Adjustments are very limited, and I was unable to get it to hold either my iPhone or classic-style iPod without it falling out or being WAY to tight. So unless you know that your car has a good mount spot, that it doesn't require bending or cutting the bracket at all, and that your mobile device will fit in the mount, look elsewhere.
