Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)I had been looking for a bookshelf system for my bedroom for some time. I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars but also didn't want to buy a piece of junk (I know, I want it all!). I narrowed my choices down to this Philips unit and the Panasonic SC-EN25. This unit came highly recommended by several other web sites and offered an iPod dock option which swung my decision to Philips. I've owned my unit since June of 2007, and for the most part I've been very pleased with the unit.
PROS
- Sound quality is impressive for such an inexpensive unit. The unit's two-way speakers, rated at 5 watts, provide a nice warm sound. This unit won't be mistaken for a boombox, but for the average room in a home (my bedroom is 12' x 14') it offers more volume then I'll ever need.
- Plenty of features, including sleep mode (presets for 120, 90, 75, 60, 45 and 30 minutes), CD and Radio alarm options, 40 radio station presets, diverse CD player support (CDR, CD-RW, MP3-CD & WMA-CD) & USB Direct mode just to name a few.
- Quiet CD drive operation. I've seen many inexpensive bookshelf systems where the CD player's mechanism can be heard across the room. This unit's drive is undetectable.
- iPod dock feature works like a charm. I own an 80GB iPod Classic (5th generation) and it integrates just fine with the unit.
- A feature-rich 24-key remote control.
- A surprising one-year parts & labor warranty (Heck, Sony's warranty on their consumer electronics is only 90 days!).
CONS
- In radio mode, the system's volume, even at its lowest setting, is loud enough that some will find it distracting when trying to go to sleep. Surprisingly, it isn't a problem in USB, iPod dock or CD mode.
- I wish the iPod dock was included in the base package rather than a separate purchase ($29 MSRP). It isn't as well stocked by resellers and is difficult to find for many shoppers.
Overall I have been very pleased with the unit. I would highly recommend this stereo system for anyone looking for a bookshelf stereo that offers good sound quality at a very reasonable price.
P.S. When I registered my unit online at Philips website, I was given the opportunity to purchase a two-year extension of the original warranty at a price of $15, which I thought was very reasonable.
P.P.S. If availability of this unit continues to be an issue here at Amazon, Target stores stock it on a regular basis. They've even placed it on sale (@ $79) twice in the past six months.
