(More customer reviews)again, great idea; poorly implemented. charged it up via an AC outlet then tried to test it on my Nokia N95. all my phone did was say, "not charging". then when plugging it back up, the LED failed to light up to show that it was charging, so i think it's broken.
i'm going to look into getting a Brunton.

(More customer reviews)I have owned many different PDA's and this is by far the best one I have encountered. If you like your phone and PDA to be the same this is not your PDA, but if you like a good solid PDA with blue tooth, wireless, and my favorite feature of all GPS capability then you will love this small compact PDA. I previously owned a Navagation PDA's from a different manufacturer and was not impressed because the button set up was different than that of a standard PDA, so games were impossible to use because of the button configuration; however, this PDA has a standard PDA button set up that is back lit with a speaker on the front unlike my other PDA's. I like using the GPS as a GPS not for navigation, but you could certainly use this for navigation with software purchase or you could buy the model with navigation built in as well. Some higher resolution PDA's like this one may not run games that are only set up for lower resolution PDA's, but this runs most everything and you can usually find a patch or a fix for that issue if it's a game or program you just can't live without. I finally found a great PDA with built in GPS that still works like a standard PDA.
***Update*** This is my fourth PDA and I have had great luck with this unit as a GPS unit both in my car and outside, but it has to be set on 'COM4' both under the GPS setting and in the GPS program you're using. In addition, the infrared beaming under setting/connections/beam must be unchecked so you can't receive incoming beams while using the GPS since they both use COM4. It does take longer to get a connection while moving in a car, but if remaining stopped with the unit in the dash or suctioned to the front windshield mine will find a signal in 1 minute or less assuming you have it set up correctly. Once you aquire a signal it does well and often works in my house but usually never inside a building and I don't have the attenna you can plug into the back either. My previous unit actually took longer to get a signal and it had Navigation built in. While I do agree that a regular GPS or car navigation may be quicker at getting a signal and may have a longer battery life...just know they don't do much else! I use this at work for medical information, the Gym for music, at home as a TV remote, to play games, sync with my calendar, email, contacts or search the internet on my wireless network, and even print wirelessly with it. Occasionally I have even used it for bible study at church. I travel quite a bit and have used it to mark routes and calculate distances, elevations along with speeds(I discovered the new larger tires on my car made my odometer read 3-5mph slower than I was actually travelling-can you say speeding ticket?), but I have not used it for geocaching yet. An unnamed free map program also works great as long as you have a wireless connection. I usually use it to plan my travel route and then save the directions to WORD before I leave as a reference while I'm in transit. This free map program also works great to find stores, hotels or restaurants and it allows you to put them directly into your contacts if you like. My house also looks pretty cool zoomed in on the satellite view using the same program. Finally, if you can't live without all your old palm programs since I owned one of those at one time as well there is a great unnamed program(emulator) that allows you to use most of the OS programs on your PDA if you can't find an equivalent program for the PDA platform. I live in a small town and it seems to work great for me at home or on the road. If you want everything but phone and camera, this is the one to get.

GNS 5870 MFI GPS Bt Receiver "WAAS" Enabled Review

(More customer reviews)Like some, I bought the Wi-Fi only iPad because I specifically didn't want the 3G capability. But in hindsight, I did miss at least the GPS capability. So to make up for my "remorse", I ordered the external bluetooth GNS 5870. It pairs quickly with the iPad buetooth and locked on to 6 satellites (based on one app's notification) through a large upstairs window in about 2 or 3 minutes. It was a little faster I believe through my car windshield. And it stayed locked on even after walking briefly into a shopping mall with it in my shirt pocket. How accurate? Two iPad apps say accuracy is within 30 feet but this reading is through an apartment window. The accuracy of Wi-Fi only was reported as 213 feet. But the GNS 5870 works very well all by itself and thats why five stars. I would not rate it less just because the "touch and slide" on and off is slightly finicky and can be unexpectedly activated by certain movements within a coat pocket etc. Its very portable at 1 3/4 x 3 inches and has a nice rubberized body except for the 1/2 inch wide plastic touch strip. The total GNS 5870 cost at $160.00, means I'm paying about $30.00 more than the iPad 3G model would have cost.
None of my views would matter though, if the GNS 5870 cannot work with the few iPad mapping, navigation, and GPS apps that are compatible with the Wi-Fi only iPad. So I discuss these apps not as an endorsement, but just to show that the GNS 5870 does work well without Wi-Fi and with no extra expense of a 3G data plan. It should be noted however, that this does not replace the usefulness or maybe the overall accuracy of the iPad 3G, as the iPad 3G has three modes of triangulation: Wi-Fi, 3G and GPS, which provide navigation assistance when some of the modes like satellite are not available. My uses however, may be in areas of no Wi-Fi and no cell towers. In this case, my Wi-Fi only IPad with the GNS 5870 will probably be as useful as the 3G model.
That said, I have tried all the following apps riding in my car with the GNS 5870 resting on the dash. The device tracks fine with the following apps that store map data internally in the iPad: Topo Maps, MotionX GPS HD and the iPhone app Navigon MyRegion. It also works fine with the iPad Google Maps but only in "classic" and "terrain" views. This is because Google's map base is not stored internally in the iPad and must be first accessed on the fly through Wi-Fi. The "satellite" and "hybrid" views are too large I believe to be cached in the app itself. For the same reasons, the GNS 5870 does not play well with Google Earth because the app does not store large data fields internally. But smaller, less memory intensive map areas and routes in Google Maps ("classic" and "terrain") can be cached and used later using only the GNS 5870. These are erased from the cache however after any changes are made. The GNS 5870 works and tracks with the app Big World although this app also uses the Google Maps data base and I'm not sure how much of that map base is stored internally.
But if you are having Wi-Fi only iPad "buyers remorse", and you still want GPS, this is one excellent way to go. And if I get lost 30 feet from where I want to go then I'm in big trouble anyway.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this unit to add GPS to my iPad, and also to be able to use GPS when my iPhone 4 is in airplane mode.
This product works great, exactly as described. You simply plug the unit into the iPad/iPhone/iTouch and it adds native GPS support to every app. I can't emphasize that enough, the apps you already own work great with it, they don't need to be updated at all to work.
The bad elf gps collects and keeps an atlas of the GPS satellites on board the unit, so even from a cold start it finds it's position very quickly. This is a high performance GPS too, it works at altitude in a jet aircraft just fine, even at 35,000' at 500 mph, when the native iPhone 4 GPS couldn't even find it's position. (Refer to any airline's policies on portable electronic equipment before operating any iDevice inflight, but I'm sure you knew that.)
Of course this GPS draws it's power from the iPad/iPhone/iTouch, so it does drain the battery some. My experience using an iPhone 4, using a program called Skycharts Pro, with a constant screen full bright updates (worse case) was that it drained 15% of the battery life an hour. Since the iPad has a much bigger battery, I expect excellent battery life using this unit with the iPad's glorious 10" screen.
If you have access to a power source, you don't even need to be concerned about battery life, it has a USB type plug and cord included that you can use to power/charge/sync the iDevice while using the GPS. The only small downside is that my car charger uses a docking plug, I have to buy a new car charger that I can plug a USB cable into instead, an input 30 pin connector would have been better in my opinion.
I am recommending this product to anyone who wants to add GPS to their apple devices, or those who change devices every year, as this device can transfer as newer iPads & iPod touches enter the market.
