Kestrel 4500NV Pocket Weather Tracker w/ Wireless Bluetooth Technology Review

The accuracy, functionality, and convenience of this device is second to none at going prices. With the optional vane mount and a cheap camera tripod, this system offers the functionality of much larger, much more expensive "portable" weather stations in a far more manageable size. When collecting weather data is an important adjunct to your field work (I study bird migration), you begin to appreciate the hard thought that went into the design of this product.
Since I hike at night, stargaze, and regularly find myself conducting bird surveys in twilight, I made the backlight more of a factor in my decision to get this particular product than I should have. Truthfully, I would have been just as pleased with the regular yellow 4500 (with its Timex Indiglo-style EL backlight) as I am with this product, which is functionally identical but comes with a more muted case color and a backlight tailored for use in nocturnal LE/military ops. Contrary to what is often written about the Kestrel NV models, the NV's backlight is amply bright when a backlight is actually *needed* to see the display. (Certainly it is hard to discern in daylight.) And its soft pink hue certainly does seem easy on my eyes in low light. Nice job, NK.
My 4500NV is also one of the newer bluetooth models, which syncs up rather conveniently with my Windows 7 netbook. A perk of having this functionality is that I can wirelessly capture "live" measurements or download data at the end of the day without even taking the kestrel out of my field bag. Cool!
A lot of folks expressed concern over losing the battery shims used in all 4500 models. I don't really understand this; the shims are not all that small and are colored pink. You'd have to be pretty cavalier (or in a rush) when changing batteries to lose the shim! In a pinch, I suspect a few small, cleverly placed strips of duct tape would do fine in maintaining battery alignment. It would, however, probably would be to NK's benefit to include an extra shim in the box as backup. No matter; NK was kind enough to send me two extras.
My experience with NK as a company has been positive. The emails I've fired off to the company since purchasing the unit were attentively and carefully answered. My request for extra shims was answered positively, and these were sent to me without cost. I get a definite sense that NK cares about its customers.

Icom IC-A24 Handheld Nav/Comm Review

The Icom IC-24 is an excellent handheld unit to communicate either G/G or A/G. The additional VOR functions are also great and provide a pilot or ground operator azimuth and ID of the dialed in VOR. My use (installation of VOR systems) had one drawback in that I was located too close (in the building) to the VOR for good communications to occur due to de-sense of the receiver front end. This was corrected by use of a high pass filter in the antenna line. For most users this would not be a problem.

The Pilot's Favorite Handheld is Here! Easy to use while flying Simple one-handed operation is the most essential feature of the IC-A24. The well labeled, large keypad provides user friendly operation. The large display shows both letters and numbers and is easy to see, making for fast frequency recognition. The display is backlit, and so is the keypad. The light stays on until you turn it off – a very handy feature for flying at night. "Flip-flop" channel recall The IC-A24 stores the last 10 channels used. You can easily recall those channels by pushing the "flip-flop" recall buttons on the front panel. It is convenient for switching between several channels, such as NAV and COM channels. VOR navigation The IC-A24 has VOR navigation functions. The DVOR mode shows the radial to or from a VOR station and the CDI mode shows the course deviation to/from a VOR station. You can also input your intended radial to/from the VOR station and show the course deviation on the display. In the USA version, the duplex operation allows you to call a COM channel, while you are using VOR navigation. External DC power jack An external DC power jack allows for operation with the wall charger, BC-110 or the cigarette lighter cable, CP-20. When the battery pack is installed, simultaneous charging during operation is also possible. In addition, an optional battery case, BP-208N, is available. Water resistant construction The water resistant construction provides reliable operation in wet conditions. * Equivalent to IPX4 of the corresponding international standard IEC 60529 (2001).

Weather Station, EB313HG/BLRS Hand Review

What I was looking for was a simple and inexpensive instrument that could provide some basic weather data, specifically the barometric pressure (which is indicative of advancing weather systems). Instead of the barometric pressure, you get the little cloud-or-whatever-it-is icon in the top right, that being the device's interpretation of pressure data (which is does not show you). The only way to tell if a barometer is accurate is to check it against known accurate ones, over a few days at minimum. Because this isn't possible on this device, essentially you're just hoping that the little icon in the top right is somehow always accurate.
It's a toy, and I should have known better than to buy a cheap product and expect it to behave even slightly like a quality instrument.
If you just want something that will tell you the temperature, humidity, and time, I suppose this is great. Although a ninety nine cent drugstore version you can hang on your wall will do the same thing in that regard. The extra money you're spending is going towards the gee-I-hope-it-works-even-though-there's-no-way-to-check prediction icon.
If you need real weather data, move along.
