(More customer reviews)I bought this to replace a Creative Zen Vision:M 30 GB MP3 and Video Player (Black) that had been stolen. I really liked my Zen, but I wanted to see what new stuff had come out in the time since I bought it. This led me to getting the Archos 605 80GB instead, mainly because of the optional TV hookups. I've never liked to watch movies or TV shows (or even music videos) on my PC monitor because I can't relax and enjoy something passive while I'm at my computer. I'd also never used the Zen's video capabilities much because the screen was too small. The Archos 605, on the other hand, could be hooked up to a TV (with the DVR station or other accessories--I bought the DVR station), which would allow me to watch downloaded TV shows and movies in comfort--and even better, with other people (it's difficult to crowd around a computer desk to watch a movie), plus I'd be able to watch stuff on the go with its larger screen.
The wifi access, web browser plug-in and PDF reader also helped sell me on the Archos 605. I particularly looked forward to being able to read ebooks in PDF format.
So when I ordered the Archos 605, I was thinking of it as an MP3 "with benefits."
When the Archos 605 arrived, I found out that its screen was totally large enough to watch video comfortably. Shortly after I got it, I watched two and a half seasons of Weeds on it. It's fantastic! I can carry a TV show into the kitchen to grab a snack, etc. When I'm home alone, I'm even able to rely on the built-in speaker--for TV shows, I don't need fantastic sound quality; I just need to be able to hear what they're saying. It's very cool; I'm very addicted. :)
Like I said, I bought the DVR station with it. I had wondered how a video file from the Archos would hold up enlarged on a TV screen, but no worries--the picture quality is good (we have a 32" set). I've recorded some stuff from our TiVo onto the Archos, and the picture quality is good in that direction, too. Since we do have a TiVo, I haven't used the Archos as a DVR (with the downloaded TV listings and scheduled recordings), so I can't say how easy that is to use, but it's definitely easy to manually record something, and I was happy to see that I could tell it how long to record for.
As an MP3 player, it's not as good as the Zen, simply because it's not, primarily, an MP3.
One way the Zen (and probably most other MP3 players) is a better MP3 player than the Archos is that if you power the Archos 605 off while you're playing music, it doesn't automatically start up where you left off when you turn it back on. Instead you boot up to the main screen, and then you have to tap the "resume" icon; otherwise nothing happens. In this way it's less "plug and go" than my Zen was; sometimes if I'm only going to be driving for a few minutes (like a hop from the grocery store to the gas station), I won't bother starting it up at all. Also, the way you lock the controls takes a few seconds longer than the Zen did. With the Zen, you just slid the switch to the lock position. With the Archos, you hold down the TV button until the lock icon appears on the screen.
If you're playing from a playlist when you turn the unit off, and then you hit "resume" after you turn it back on, it doesn't seem to resume the playlist--it does indeed play the song you were on, but it's playing it from the album instead of the playlist, so the next song after that is the next song on the album, not the next song on the playlist. Possibly this is glitch that will be fixed in a firmware update (or perhaps has been--I haven't updated my firmware in a couple weeks).
Finally, changing the play mode (normal, shuffle, repeat one, repeat all), takes a lot more navigating around than it did on the Zen. It really shouldn't take that many clicks.
Sound-wise, the Archos is good as the Zen was, and its drawbacks as an MP3 player aren't so onerous that I'd consider buying a separate MP3 player. The Archos does well enough.
The PDF reader, however, turned out to be a disappointment. First, it takes several (loooong) seconds to go to the next page. Second, there's no way to bookmark where you are so that you can pick up where you left off. I figured I could just remember what page I was on and use the Go To Page feature to get back to it, but the Go To Page feature uses a slider, which is nowhere near as quick as if they'd let me type in a page number, and it takes a long freaking time for it to then load that page. Ugh. So this thing definitely hasn't replaced my Palm Tungsten for e-reading.
I haven't used the web browser or wireless much. It seemed pretty slow the times I have, and there's no "tap feedback" in the Content Portal, so when you tap on a link, you often don't know whether the tap has registered or not because the screen stays the same while the Archos (slooooowly) downloads the data for the next screen. That's frustrating. The web wasn't as frustrating as the Content Portal; I just haven't had much of a need to use it.
Another downside is that there aren't any cases for it that will protect the unit while allowing you direct, immediate access to it, the way the skin I had for my Zen did. Instead it comes with a padded, envelope-like case that you have to slip the unit completely out of if you want to use it. (To be fair, it's much better than the cloth pouch that came with the Zen.) Leather case options are limited, and all the ones I've seen require you to open the case in order to view the screen or access the navigation. The one from Archos won't even let you turn it off with the case closed, which isn't very handy if you're listening to audio and want to shut it off quickly.
I don't know how many hours I'm getting out of my battery. I did listen to music for 10 hours on a recent road trip without it giving out on me, but I didn't keep going to see how much more I could get out of it. I've also watched a couple hours of video without it running out of juice--and again, I ended up dropping it in the DVR station (which charges it) before it did run out, so all I can say about the battery is that it's lasting long enough for my needs.
Despite the caveats I've listed above, I LOVE my Archos 605. I love being able to take TV shows and movies with me everywhere. I love that I can finally watch bootleg concerts and other stuff I've downloaded on the "big screen." It's easy to use. The DVR station is easy to use. The two work together seamlessly. The Archos holds a ton off stuff. It plays my music. It lets me browse the web if I need to.
I'm happy with it, definitely. And I'm keeping my fingers crossed that future firmware updates will make me even happier with it.

(More customer reviews)When you're buying a modem for a pocket computer, you're probably not interested in bells and whistles; you want something that's as small and as reliable as possible, that will let you connect to the Internet and check your email or surf the Web.
The Pretec modem fits that need perfectly. There's no flashing LEDs, no driver discs; the box contains nothing but the tiny modem, a phone cord and a brief instruction manual. (There's not even an AOL disc. They must be slipping.)
I was able to get connected in less than ten minutes, without touching the instruction manual. Just slip the modem into the slot, plug in the phone cord, set up a few basic connection settings, and you're off and running. If your ISP supports WIndows dialup networking, it will very probably support this.
The manual is the weak spot; the installation settings it describes on page 7 and 8 may well not match up with those needed. Since the dialogs used to configure the Pocket PC are quite similar to the dialogs used to set up Windows dial-up networking, you'll want to have your ISP's setup instructions available.
In conclusion, this product is certainly more than worthwhile; it gives you full-featured dialup capabilities in only a few cubic inches of space.
One final caveat: This product is also known as the "Pocket PC Email Expansion Pack". If you've just purchased a Pocket PC, you may find that there's a special offer included for this expansion pack, and you'll want to check out that offer's pricing and terms before deciding where to buy.

(More customer reviews)This iPaq gets none of the love it deserves. In truth, it is the best stand-alone PDA available on the market. First, let me address the immediate complaints made about the 4705.
1. Price
Um, get a paper route. This is the highest end device of its kind, because of its speedy processor, VGA screen, and extras which are packed into the device. There are Pocket PCs available for much less money, but with lower price you sacrifice quality.
2. Size
Seven Ounces, the size of a pack of index cards. This PDA fits in your front pants or jacket pocket, and form factor dictates that it be that big to accomodate the large screen.3. Screen flip cover.
This is removable. I've never understood this complaint.4. Touchpad.
Using a floating cursor, like a laptop computer is actually a huge convenience. Using the pad as a navigation director isn't easy, so be aware of that before purchasing.Anyway. The 4705 runs on a very fast processor, and can handle several tasks at once. The VGA screen displays 640X480 pixels, making videos, games, and websites absolutely gorgeous to view. There is tons of built-in memory, as well as SD and CF slots to accomadate another 3 GB of storage. This is more than enough room for all your videos, music, photos, games, and PIM. Pocket Informant is included, to manage your Notes, Calendar, Tasks, and Contacts. It integrates with Outlook for your Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Tasks, and Inbox. ActiveSync 3.8 works very quickly, and you'll have no problem taking both your office, and your personal life with you on the go. Microsoft Office is included, so you have both Word and Excel. You can read, edit, write, and print documents and spreadsheets. These can be transferred to and from your computer. Windows Media Player 9.0 is included, allowing you to listen to .wma files, or watch .wmv files. A free e-book reader can be found to allow you to read books on the device, and if you subscribe to Audible.com, you can listen to books. There are literally hundreds of games that you can find for the device that are mind blowingly realistic graphics-wise. Some are free, some cost a small fee to download. HP Image Zone lets you make slideshows of your favorite photo albums. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also integrated in the device. This means you have two options of accessing the internet at any given time. Wi-Fi means that you can get a high speed internet connection near a Wi-Fi hotspot such as a coffeehouse, hotel, airport, office, home network, etc. If you're not near a Wi-Fi area, you can connect at dial-up speed using a Bluetooth modem. I use my Motorola V710 phone from Verizon. This may cost more, so check with your wireless company. All in all, this device is a life saver. To recap, I use this iPAQ to:
1. Maintain my Contacts, Calendar, Notes, Tasks, and Inbox
2. Keep all documents and spreadsheets handy
3. View all my photos
4. Read ebooks
5. Connect to the internet whenever, wherever
6. Play numerous PC console- quality video games
7. Listen to hours and hours of music
8. Watch video, including full length DVD movies
9. Record notes
And tons more! This iPAQ is worth every penny you'll pay for it. And if you have a job that involves anything more complex than soaking french fries, it will basically pay for itself, because you'll save hours from your job. The question isn't: Should you buy the HP iPAQ 4705? The question is: You haven't bought the HP iPAQ 4705 yet?!

(More customer reviews)I learned quickly that while the iPAQ was a great PDA, I used the onboard storage up quick. An e-book or two, a map or 3, maybe a couple of mp3, all of your "pocket outlook" files, avant go content and, heaven forbid, a short video file and you don't have any memory left at all... you can't even rub two bits together!
If you don't want to spend the coin for the PC Card expansion pack and battery time isn't a big issue to you, then this is a great solution. You can throw in any of several compact flash modules or, if you are a real space junkie you can use an IBM microdrive in it. At about a fourth of the cost of a PC Card pack you can add in that extra 128 mb. A warning tho. Given the opportunity to add in more storage, you will want to. I think everyone who can will want a Microdrive in this thing at one point or another. Sure, it drains the battery a bit more but in my opinion that is more from you using the content you carry more often and not a serious drain from the expansion pack.

HP iPAQ RX1950 Pocket PC Review

(More customer reviews)There is a firmware update for the iPAQ rx1950/1955 that fixes the power on problem when using an SD card. If you go to hp.com, pick Software & Driver Downloads, then type in the product name and continue, then pick Windows Mobile 5.0, you'll see a list of updates for the unit. Right now there is an (OS) ROM update, and a firmware update. The firmware update is the one that fixes this problem, but if you are planning to load the OS/ROM update as well, load that one first, then load the Firmware update. You should always back up all your data before applying an update.
I also had a similar problem when I didn't have the battery cover on and latched just right, but that's OK now too, as long as I don't drop the thing on the ground.

HP iPAQ hx2495b Pocket PC (FA674B#ABA) Review

(More customer reviews)Okay, so I bought a brand spanking new hx2495b. One of the first things I did was install a SD card. Then the problems started. Fairly frequent soft boots required to get the thing to turn on. Battery dead (0%) from full charge over night. Not too often, but a couple of times in the 2 weeks I had it.
Emailed hp support about the problem (I did forget to mension I had a SD card installed) and they, of course, recommended doing a ROM update. Okay, I just got a brand new unit, why should it need a ROM update all ready? I go and locate the update, down load it and go to install it. Sure enough the update they wanted me to install was the exact same version all ready in the silly thing! Like that is going to do any good, duh?
Then I notice one of the things the ROM update was suppost to fix is a lock up and battery drain problem when an SD card is installed. Humm, maybe they haven't really fixed that. So, I pull my SD card and whad ya know, all the problems went away!
Well, I really don't need the SD card, so I can live with that, but I'd wish they had said something about it! Even though I forgot about the SD card being in there, they should have realized the problem when I said the battery went dead over night! I can't be the only one to have this problem. Guess they don't want to admit there is still a flaw in the programming. A year after it was suppost to be fixed!
So, I'd recommend if you don't need an SD card, don't put one in. If you do need it, pull it out when your not using it.
One other thing to keep in mind is when you turn the PDA off, it doesn't really turn off. The display goes out, but a lot of stuff is still running inside. This is so it will come back exactly where you left off when you turn it back on. That's nice, but if you don't have it on a charger, it will drain the battery in 3-4 days just sitting around. Maybe not a big deal to most people, but I want to use the thing to keep a trail journal while hiking the Appalachian Trail, and I could go a week between towns and AC power. Guess I'll have to lug a solar charger along too if I want to use it.
Other than the problem with the SD card and not really turning off when its off, its a great little gizzmo. Solidly built and otherwise works great.
Oh, one other thing you might want to know. The instructions aren't clear about this. Activesync likes to turn it's self on all the time. The way to stop this is to set it to manual sync only. Unfortunetly, the button to access this command is not available if you have it set for USB sync. To set it to manual sync only, you have to set up a server connection first.
Start activesync (if it isn't already running!)
Menu > add server source
enter a dummy server address like 1.1.1.1
enter some other dummy info into the next blocks it wants you to fill in
then go back to menu and click on schedule.
Now select manual sync in two places.
Go back and delete the server connection.
Now active sync will only come on when you want it too.

HP iPAQ RX3715 Pocket PC Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this a couple of days ago at the store. Trust me, I did my running around trying to decide which PDA to buy. I was not really wanting to spend five hundred dollars on a thingamajig, but after trying it out, I loved it. I went to all of the big stores, and this was the one I kept on coming back to this one. Let me explain why I picked this one.
1. You get a decent amount of memory and it comes with one of those cards with a 100MBS on it...I put 2 albums worth of songs, and guess what--that's fine. I wanted the IPOD before this, and really, I don't need to have a thousand songs. I don't have a thousand songs worth listening to anyway! The sound quality is perfect. You can also buy portable speakers and it'll sound great.
2. It was easy to work with. I fully personalized mine with my photos and changed the theme. It's really like a beautiful tiny computer that's fast and easy to use.
3. If I was going to shell out the dough, I actually enjoy feeling the weight and quality. It looks and feels good in the hand. I did't want something that felt like a cheap calculator, other pda feel this way. BUT some prefer the lightness too. I don't.
4. The camera. Listen, I knew the camera wasn't all that. It's similar to most camera phones. There's no flash! But I like that there is a camera b/c if I'm in class and I don't feel like drawing a diagram, tada, I can take that picture! I'm not going to depend on this camera for my vacation pics. Duh. I have my nice 3MP camera for that. Its just great for those times that you wish you can take a quick snap. Especially living around New York. You see some crazy stuff at times that nobody believes you if you try to explain it. LOL
5. It's a voice recorder...did I say that I was a student??? I wish I had this a long time ago. This a great feature.
6. As for battery life, I've used this for two days w/o charging, the battery is still has ten more hours to go.
7. There's a cradle which connects you to your pc and it's internet connection.
500 dollars sounds like a lot, but you'll end up buying sd cards and cradles, which add up! Plus, this will be able to use longer that those models that are soon to go obsolete.
The only thing that I wish were better:
-I wish there was a better case included--It's an excercise each time to pull it off. But, come on...
Go for it...the other ones, you'll regret a few month from now when you see what features you're missing out on.

GPS is slow to start up but once its up it's surprisingly functional, but you do have to pay for the turn by turn navigation feature. The hardware is very well made making the device sturdy and easy to work with. The screen is large and has a resolution of 800*480 which makes it good for viewing full size web pages. The keyboard is a good size for the average persons thumbs and is also back lit. Navigation in the OS is straight forward and very customizable. Also the fact that it is open source means there are A LOT of awesome apps available. Battery Life is also very good, about 5-6 hours of continuous use. The screen automatically adjusts to ambient light which helps conserve battery. The 2 speakers are clear and loud. The included headset makes Christal clear calls on Skype. The n810 is first and foremost an internet tablet and browsing the web on this device is as close as you are going to get to using a desktop with a mobile device. With the Mozilla based browser and desktop Flash support I have not found a site that this thing can't handle. The hardware in this device is just amazing, they really thought of everything. The software is just as good and is still being improved, not to mention that you can update the OS when a new version comes out. This is good investment if you want something that will stay current for a long time.

I used it for a year or so, but never got to like it compared to the PocketPC. I recently discovered the Pharos 535X, and find it an excellent PDA. I ordered the model with the better screen display and faster chip, which I believe is worth the difference in price. I haven't checked out the GPS yet, but since that is Pharos' specialty, I am confident it will also work fine. Highly recommended.

Nokia N810 Portable Internet Tablet Review

(More customer reviews)I bought the N810 (had been considering the N800 a long time) and this really is a great internet tablet.
I think Nokia has it right in no tmaking it a phone too (and locked down). Firstly - the wifi is super on this and detects wifi better than my laptop.
The OS is very fast and spiffy and the software feels like its running on a desktop - fast.
You can connect to 3G thru the phone over bluetooth (provided you have a data plan) and that gives me always connected and on status. I call my parents in India now ofrom any place using Gizmo, or Google talk . Its a great tablet for VoIP. Just have to wait some more for Skype to also work on this soon.
As a music player and Video player - its superb. Great album art also included in some apps like Kagu and UKMP. Though the music quality is a wee bit lacking in comparison to a good mp3 player (like my iRiver).
It's not a PDA, so many of regular PDA apps are missing - but again thanks to open source community (and to Nokia for making it an open device) you can install some basic PIM apps too.
Best of all is internet browsing - for people who need access to the web a lot while being mobile - THSI IS THE DEVICE. Support flash very well (and hence Youtube too).
And lastly the screen is fabulous. Very sharp and crisp and bright - all web sites on the browser is very easy to read even on this small a device - thanks to the screen resolution.
And lastly the GPS is good - does not replace a full featured dedicated GPS device - but good for a handy GPS navigation.

It is just like the regular (blue) N810, but with a WiMax radio tuned to 2.5 GHz for WiMax service provided by Xohm (the only WiMax provider). The device is not locked to WiMax, but any provider at 2.5 GHz.
The battery life is good, but with the WiMax signal, the connection drops when driving around, but the Xohm service is brand new (less than a month old at this time of writting) and I'm sure there will be improvements in the works.

HP iPAQ 4150 Pocket PC Review

(More customer reviews)I have had this IPAQ for several years now and it has more than served its purpose for me. Just recently however I wanted to add more memory to it and went to Staples to buy a 4 GIG SDHC. When I inserted the card into the unit,it still had the same amount of memory as before. (You can check this by clicking on SETTINGS/System/Memory and then click on STORAGE CARD.) So I called up HP and after they checked their records, they told me that that this unit can only take up to 512MB !! I was then put thru to their parts department and asked if they even made 512MB SD cards anymore. They said no they didn't, but that it could be specially ordered for only $228!! For that amount of money I could easily buy another unit, forget the card. I couldn't believe it. So I researched online and found a user who was using a 4 GIG SD card in his IPAQ 4150 with no problems. I read that since the Windows Mobile 2003 runs with FAT32, there should be no reason why it can't handle SD cards with 2 gig,4 gig, etc., when you need that extra memory. The only difference was that you have to use a NON SDHC card. The HC stands for High capacity which uses a different architecture. So, you have to use the standard 4 GIG SD card without the HC on the label. I ran back to Staples and found a 2 GIG standard SD card from SanDisk (they didn't have the higher 4 GIG on the shelf or I would've bought that one) for only $14.99 plus tax and when I inserted the card in the unit, it showed the increase in memory just fine! I wanted to pass this along so that you don't get discouraged when you need that extra amount of memory and are told that it can't be done. I'm still cringing at the thought of buying only 512 MB of memory for $228! It's unbelievable what people will try to con you into. In any case, this has nothing to do with the unit itself. I am now a very happy camper indeed!

Palm GPS Car Kit (3224NA) Review

(More customer reviews)I've been using the Palm GPS Car Kit with my T5 for about six days now. It works well together with the T5 and, in spite of a few minor quirks and glitches, I give it a 5-star rating. Part of that is because I am just easily amused by cool technology that works, and the Palm GPS Car Kit clearly meets that criteria IMHO. The other part (of 5-stars in spite of a few quirks) is that even at the current Palm price of $179 (available for considerably less elsewhere), this thing is a *steal*.
Pro:
- The cradle is infinitely adjustable on your windshield, so it can be swiveled and rotated to any position you want to get the best view and minimize glare in the daytime.
- Cradle's GPS signal reception is remarkable. The Car Kit comes bundled with an external antenna, but I have not needed it in spite of several stretches of road on my way to work that are heavily wooded.
- Routine functions can be done simply by finger taps on the screen. This includes changing routes if you want to go a different way, bringing up traffic information if you use that component, changing volume, screen colors, destination (if you have them programmed as favorites or if you are using Points of Interest), and more. If you are changing destinations which require entering a specific location or address, you need to pull off the road to do that...though you can still do it by finger-touch, it requires more accuracy and attention, and you *will* drive off the road or have an accident if you try to do this while driving.
- On-screen information, even on the small-ish screens of a Palm, is clear and very readable. It gives lots of info (which you can turn on or off) including speed, time to destination, miles to destination, direction you are traveling (i.e. a compass), upcoming turns by distance, direction and name of next road.
- If you miss a turn, it simply and quickly re-routes you the nearest way back to the original route.
- It gives you many options to set route including shortest, fastest, non-highway, avoid tolls, and other parameters. If you don't like the route it shows you, you can have it recalculate the route and gives you the option of avoiding specific portions of that route.
- Included TomTom maps seem pretty darn up-to-date to me, though others have noted some errors. The Points Of Interest databases have many, many locations listed, particularly lots of hotel locations. Note, however, that these are more detailed in the State or Regional US maps, than they are on the Major Roads and Cities map.
- You can plan a trip off-line (advance planning) very much like how Mapquest works...i.e. enter city, street and addresses (or use Points of Interest or just "city to city") for your starting and destination points, and it calculates your route showing miles and time.
- Did I mention the great bargain this thing is?
Cons:
- Occasional freezes on the Palm. This has happened after I obtained updated traffic info via bluetooth phone. (You have to first Register with an email address and password on the TomTom site, then from the Palm you can activate a free 30-day trial of the TomTom Plus Traffic service.) I don't know yet whether this will be a persistent issue. Freezes are quickly remedied with a soft reset. After reset, power off the Palm, reinstert in cradle, power back on and you're back in action.
- Cannot navigate or plan trips across multiple maps. Even if you have more than one map installed, the software only works with the currently "loaded" map and you only have one map loaded at a time. If you need to navigate or plan a trip which spans more than one map (i.e. across country), you need to use the Major Roads and Cities map. It works well, but it does not have the level of detail (i.e. smaller roads and addresses, many fewer POI's) as the State or Regional maps.
- Maps are large, so to install a few US regional maps you really should have a 1GB card though this is by no means necessary. Regional maps are typically 140-170 MB in size. The Major American Roads and Cities map is something like 220 MB. Individual state maps are considerably smaller, but it is *much* more functional to install several Regional US maps onto your SD card.
- Included documentation is fairly sketchy. As for the hardware end of it, all you really get from Palm is a fold-out setup sheet. The TomTom software manual on the disc is "ok" but not great. The TomTom support site is likewise "ok" but not great.
All in all, the Palm GPS Car Kit is functional, flexible, and highly entertaining to those like me who are easily amused.

Only instead of TomTom - the Copilot, but I didn't notice any difference - just as handy. I've been using it for few months here already and don't have any complaints.
Btw. if you bought it and have problems with switching the keyboard modes, don't hurry to return it - HTC official w-site has the fresh firmware update, which fixes this issue (if you had it) and boosts up the perfomance.

viliv N5 Series - 32GB SSD, 1.33GHz Intel Atom CPU, Windows 7 Starter Handheld MID/UMPC Review

(More customer reviews)I am extremely impressed with the build quality, size and the screen. The reviews I read before purchasing mentioned that the build quality was great, but I had no idea that it would be such a rock solid device.
I've owned small computers, netbooks and even a Vaio UX 390N UMPC, but the clamshell design of the Viliv N5 makes it look like an eyeglass case, so I can slip it in and out of my pocket or just carry it by hand and it doesn't look like I'm carrying a computer around. I really feel comfortable taking this with me to any restaurant, gym or wherever and it doesn't seem awkward to have a computer with me. I'm a web developer and occasionally things happen while I'm away from the office that I need to attend to, so I used to carry my laptop with me all the time, but the straw that broke the camel's back, so-to-speak, was when I carried my laptop around Key West for a whole day and I couldn't enjoy my trip there because my back was hurting the entire time. Now, I can just slip the Viliv N5 into the pocket don't even have to think about it.
Battery life so far has been decent. 4 hours is the norm with the screen on full brightness, but I don't see reason I couldn't get 6 hours by lowering the screen brightness and turning off wifi.
The features I love about the Viliv N5 are:
- Small size (it's only an inch longer than my HTC Evo 4G phone)
- full keyboard (the keyboard is a little tricky to type on, but you can touch type if you have small fingers). I usually find it easiest to hold the N5 with both hands and thumb type.
- the thumbpad is amazing - it's very easy to move the mouse pointer around the screen - in some ways it is better than a mousepad
- the screen is bright and crisp - even though the text is small, I can see everything clearly.
- it's a full Windows 7 computer so I can install all of the programs that I use regularly with no limitations
- I thought the 32GB SSD wouldn't have enough available space left over with Windows 7 installed, but it came with 13GB free out of the box, which is more than enough for me
- Wakes up in 5 seconds from sleep
The things that are minor annoyances are:
- Boots quickly from a cold boot, but sometimes the screen doesn't come on after waking up from sleep, so I have to turn it off and back on again to get the screen to come on. This is a minor annoyance because it only happens occasionally.
- Windows 7 starter edition is really limited. I knew Windows 7 starter was a stripped down version, but I didn't realize how stripped down. Starter Edition doesn't even allow you to change your desktop background! What the? By default it will show a nice Windows background with a Windows logo, but other than that you can only change it to solid colors (black, etc). This isn't a major issue, but it sucks that I can't use a unique photo as my background image.
- Bluetooth dial up networking doesn't work consistently. I probably should blame this on Windows 7 starter too. Let me first say that I have no problems with tethering the Viliv N5 to my HTC Evo using a USB cable and then using PDANet to connect the Viliv N5 to the internet, so that's working great. However, if I want to avoid the USB cable and use Bluetooth DUN instead, I can't do it - I've only been able to get bluetooth DUN working once and it only stayed connected for a minute or two. I have no idea what's causing this, but I've never had this issue with any other computer, so it's either something with the Bluetooth drivers or it's Windows 7 starter. Either way, I'm disappointed that this isn't working because it was an important feature to me. (I can pair the Viliv N5 with my phone without any trouble; it's only the DUN that isn't working). Kind of makes me wish I'd purchased the 3G version, but I'm sure I'll eventually get this working, even if I have to upgrade to a different version of Windows 7.
- I use a Lexmark 1420 network printer and have not had any problems installing drivers for it on any other computer. However, the Viliv N5 will not recognize the printer, will not fully install the drivers, will not print a test page from my printer. Maybe there's something unique about this particular printer that Windows 7 Starter doesn't like, but whatever the issue it's definitely an annoyance that I can't get network printing working.
With all of this said, the Viliv N5 is the best UMPC I've experienced. I've been shopping for UMPCs since the first OQO was announced, so I've been in the market for something like this for the last 10 years. It's amazing to me that someone has finally created a near-perfect UMPC with all of the features I've wanted even when the trend seems to be heading to tablets, etc., there is definitely a need for a product like this.
I believe the only weak-link with the N5 is Windows 7 Starter, but this could be remedied by installing Home or Professional edition, so I'm not taking any points away from the N5 because of this.
I was on the fence about getting this for awhile; I truly thought it would be a novelty and something I would only use occasionally, but I've been carrying the N5 with me everywhere and even using it in different rooms around the house because it doesn't ever get in the way. It's definitely a computer you can take anywhere.

(More customer reviews)I have owned my N810 (affectionately named N8 - or Nate) for about 6 months now and it has become invaluable to me. These are the activities with which I use it:
- communication, using Google Voice, or Skype
- receiving and sending email, either via included email client, or web-based email
- web browsing
- watching and saving YouTube videos
- tracking and mapping via GPS unit
- taking notes
- games/entertainment with OS2008 games, or using Palm Emulator and my favorite old Palm Pilot games
- listening to music; sound quality is EXCELLENT for a hand-held (and I'm a musician, and picky)!
- recording voice notes
- taking photos and making small videos for online use
- keeping recipes; its small size make it excellent for reading in my tiny kitchen...and I can listen to music at the same time!
- reading eBooks
- text messaging via Google Voice/wifi
There are only a couple of cons that I have found so far. The front-facing camera, intended for use in video conferencing, makes photography tricky at best. This is acceptable to me, though, since it was never meant to replace a digital camera. The other is that the O/S will require a learning curve for the average point-and-click Windows user. While the device is definitely easy to pick up and use with the installed software, and loading new programs from either the Nokia website or the maemo site using the application manager, most more detailed tasks will require a certain amount of learning for most; in short, it ain't Windows :).
There are numerous other uses and apps for this device. Even after 6 months I feel I've hardly scratched the surface of its possibilities. It is always on the road with me, has replaced my laptop on weekend trips, and replaced my more cumbersome bedtime books and magazines. It has saved me money in this way, and also in cell phone/texting costs; it has already paid for itself - probably twice over.
In short, N8 has replaced both my Zune and my Palm Pilot, and become itself an irreplaceable part of my life.

I bought this Windows Mobile PDA about a month ago to replace my old PalmOne Zire 31. Basically I wanted to have a organizer with office functions so that I could do some office work on road. I also needed a wireless connection for me to check emails outside of my office. Of course, laptop can do these jobs but it is not convenient to carry on all the time. This product is very good to serve my purposes. It can creat and edit Word and Exel files; it can also do slide show of PowerPoint but can not edit PP files. I tried to use ShowMate to perform a slide show in a projector and this device did connect with the ShowMate via bluetooth and project the slides onto the projector. However, the connection between the PDA and ShowMate is not stable and easy to be lost. Also, the PDA was freezen frequently during slode show onto the projector. I updated the firmware of the ShowMate and expect the connection could be more stable but have not tried yet.
Internet connection through wi-fi is good and easy for low security network. I can easily connect with the wireless at my home (DSL), in hotels and coffee shops. But the biggest downside for wireless connection is that this device does not support WPA2-enterprise, AES and PEAP wireless connection which is a popular highly secured wireless network in most universities including my university. I asked our university IT people for help and they spent more than two hours on it but it could not connect with our wireless network. I contacted the tech support of Pharos and they said they are working on this issue. After extensive research on this issue, I found this seems a common issue for Windows Mobile devices. Hopefully they can solve this problem very soon.
A nice feature of this device is the GPS capability. It has build-in GPS but no software provided. I bought a third-party software (Navigon MobileNavigator 7) and it worked nicely in this PDA. I am pretty satisfied on the GPS function. It can even detect GPS signal inside buildings where my regular car GPS could not. So the sensitivity is very good but it takes several minutes to obtain the signal when inside the buildings.
Overall, it is a good product but do not expect to replace your laptop with this PDA, especially for presentations using PowerPoint.
