Magellan Maestro 4000 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Magellan Maestro 4000 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

First the good stuff. The GPS accuracy exceeds my expectations, it is usually accurate to within about 10 feet. The "directions" have been flawless so far. The voice prompts are clear and easy to understand. The screen is very large and easy to read. The menus are are breeze to use, and there is no "learning curve".
Now the bad stuff. There is no way for me to look up POIs on my computer, and download them; which is stupid since the unit has a USB interface. The POIs on the GPS are all "AAA" rated places, so you are limited to the places that "AAA" wants you to go to. I looked up restaraunts in my area, for which there are at least 20 "chain restaraunts" like chili's & applebees etc; however, it only listed one obscure restaurant in my area. The next closest place it listed was nearly 10 miles away!!! In my opinion the pre-loaded POIs are absolutely useless. And with no way to download them from my PC, I am forced to look up the address via internet and then MANUALLY enter them into the GPS (this seems like stone-age technology to me).

Garmin StreetPilot i2 2.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Garmin StreetPilot i2 2.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had a Garmin iQue 3600 for over 3 years. I recently bought the i2 for my wife. We just used it in Phoenix for a few days and I must say I'm considering getting the i2 for myself. The suction cup works well and it is very compact and connects to the DC power via the mini-USB port. It makes for a very compact traveling companion.
At first, I felt that the hard button controls and no touch screen would make the interface difficult to use. To be honest, it works better in most cases! The thumb wheel/button works great and the back button is intuitive like a browser. It picks up the sats fast and gets great reception. The B&W screen is easier to see in sunlight and is pretty sharp and surprising usable for the small size. The voice is loud (and adjustable) and we had little or no issues. I like the 3D mode but you can switch to 2D if you like that better.
I agree with other reviewers about one way streets and occasional longer than needed routes. Also, U turns are a fact of life in Phoenix and it usually doesn't factor in U turns as a possibility so it takes you down and around instead. However, adjustments can be made in the settings to look for or avoid highways and not to ignore U turns, so look there.
I find that mounting my iQue is a pain so I use an external antenna and a sand bag mount. Having to haul all that on trips was a pain. I'll take the i2 from now on as it is all in one and very packable. I can see how there would be issues on windshield placement so think about that before you buy. I had no trouble on 2 different rental cars. Make sure you press solidly in middle of back before flipping lever and it wont go anywhere.
All in all, when you factor in the small size, nice usability and the price, this one is definitely top of the list! If you want a unit you will likely use in your own car all the time, I would suggest the iQue in a hard mount or the C300 series. These have touch screens and allow you to slide scroll and such. But they are twice the money!

No larger than a baseball and priced with affordability in mind, the StreetPilot i2 GPS navigation system is a great fit for commuters, college students, and corporate travelers looking to experience the ease and enjoyment of satellite navigation for the first time. Don't let the small size fool you; the i2 boasts many of the same powerful functions as Garmin's premium vehicle GPS navigators.
The StreetPilot i2 features a unique and convenient click-to-enter scroll wheel and a back button that makes it easy to select a destination from the unit's menu-driven interface. It also offers voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions through a built-in speaker, and should you miss a turn, the i2 will automatically recalculate the route to put you back on course. And perhaps most conveniently, the unit moves easily from vehicle to vehicle thanks to the integrated suction cup mount, so you don't need to go through a cumbersome process each time you change cars.
To get you from point A to point B, the StreetPilot i2 includes a MapSource City Select North America NT DVD, which contains mapping detail of the entire U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. The DVD's nearly six million points of interest range from hotels and restaurants to gas stations and ATMs, along with local attractions such as amusement parks and museums. Simply load the City Select data onto the included 128 MB Transflash data card via a fast USB connection and you're set.
As an added benefit, you can now import customized points of interest with the help of Garmin's free POI Loader software. For instance, you can upload safety cameras or school zones, and then receive a warning if you are traveling too fast in these areas. In addition, an optional proximity-alert feature notifies you of upcoming custom POIs.
Maps are displayed on the i2's high-contrast backlit FSTN monochrome display, which includes a backlight for difficult lighting conditions. Motorists even have the choice of multiple perspectives--either a 3-D mapping angle or an overhead bird's-eye view. For added convenience, drivers can power the unit with either two AA batteries (six hours, typical use) or the included 12-volt adapter cable.
The StreetPilot i2 measures 3 x 2.74 x 2.15 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
What's in the Box StreetPilot i2, America's Lite Routable base map, City Select North America DVD, PC/USB cable, 12-volt adapter cable, vehicle suction-cup mount, dashboard adhesive disk, 128 MB Transflash data card, setup guide, user's manual.

Magellan eXplorist 500 Water Resistant Hiking GPS Review

Magellan eXplorist 500 Water Resistant Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This GPS does a nice job, but getting to the point where it does that can be trying. It's a 4+, because I sense there's a little more Magellan can do in terms of ergonomics.
I guess the first thing I noticed was the screw-on USB and power adapter could go two ways, up or down. I had to look through the manual to find how to attach it, and even then what I was looking at did not turn out to be right. Oh, well. There's a sheet of paper that shows how to attach it. I guess I was not alone in this. Some say a screw-on USB is dumb or non-standard, but consider the water proof rating and a normal USB port.
Next, I have a large collection of waypoints. Since this is a new model, it didn't appear in any waypoint manager software. Eventually I could convert my old Mapsend waypoints with gpsbabel, a free program. This took time. The color really shows the waypoints.
I decided I like this GPS a lot when I got the Directroute. That's the new Mapsend, and it will route. Alas, to use DR, you have to have one of the CD's in the computer. Again, though, this is mitigated because you can upload almost 'everything' to a 256MB SD card. So, basically, I assume I don't need the CD's very often. To upload the maps is complicated. You can't just cut them and then move the files. You have to 'convert' them, a second time, and then they are easily moved to the card. I have an SD card slot in my Dell. It is very easy. But, if you didn't know to convert, it will slow you down.
On balance, the DirectRoute software is an improvement over the old Mapsend Streets. The maps are 'filtered'. I travel on a lot of backroads. While the DR shows fewer roads, it seems to be very good at showing the ones that matter. Plus, they are labeled better. The main advantage of the DR is routing, but everyone should be buying it with this in mind. I haven't done any tough routing, so check other reviews.
I think the color screen is nice. The problem with a mapping GPS is scale. If you are on a tiny road, the road shows up when the scale is very small, say .2 mile. At .2, you can't see the surrounding area, so you can't tell where you are. The color screen is better, and the scrolling is pretty smooth. A zoom out is quite quick. You can find a road with this unit, scroll up it like you are driving, and figure out where it goes. You can't ever see a minor road at a wide scale, so you end up doing this. You can place waypoints while driving up the road, but this unit routes.
The physical size small, but thick. It holds a bunch of territory with one cheap card. All of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado fit in about 70 megs. It shows a lot of roads, though it might not be up to date. Some commands are not obvious. To change the waypoint file you have to go to Preferences --> Active Setup. This did not seem obvious to me. The manual has a lot of info, but it's not easy to find a specific answer to a question. You can download it at the Magelllan site, and get a headstart.
Magellan uses a very complex file system. Some may not like it. Still, you have the internal GPS memory plus cards, and the file system makes it easy to find something. If I upload a route where the roads don't really show on the detail maps, I can put a lot of them in one file, say 200. Now I just find the waypoint file and tell the GPS to make that the active POI (it calls waypoints 'points of interest'). I really like this, because there is no limit to how many waypoints could be on a card, each neatly filed away. If I don't want waypoints cluttering the screen, I get rid of any active file of POI's.
So, Magellan did a lot with this unit, and I give them credit for it. The micro joystick is a little hard to get used to, but it really speeds entering text. It scrolls pretty well on the diagonal.
The unit is small, and pleasant to hold, at least for me. The buttons are limited in number, but getting to all the commands is easy enough.
The GPS has a learning curve, but it seems like something will be useful for a long time. Plus, with all the maps on a card, you have what you need without needing a PC. The lock is pretty good, even in the house. Magellan uses the Esc button to change pages.
Quirky, but this unit works for me.

Outfitted with a 16-color display, a high-speed USB data port, 8 MB of built-in maps, and an additional 8 MB of usable memory, the Magellan eXplorist 500 North America includes all the tools you need to navigate throughout the U.S. and Canada whether in the car or on foot. The device is rugged and lightweight, with a waterproof, impact-resistant plastic housing that stands up to almost every adventure, including whitewater rafting and hiking. At the same time, its pocket-sized chassis, which measures a mere 2.2 by 4.7 by 1.3 inches (W x H x D), is loaded with convenient features, such as detailed, built-in maps of North American roads, parks, waterways, and airports; the ability to save five track log files, 20 routes, and 500 points of interest; and an area calculator that determines the distance between saved points of interest--an ideal function when mapping out hiking trails. Other cool and convenient add-ons include a fish/hunt function that mentions the best fishing and hunting times for a specific coordinate and a similar tool that displays the rising and setting times for the sun and moon.
Should the built-in maps and extra memory prove insufficient, users can load additional map data onto Secure Digital (SD) memory cards using Magellan's MapSend software (sold separately), which is available via CD-ROM and, in some cases, online (your computer connects to the GPS through its USB port). There's no limit to the number of cards you can use, giving users access to everything from detailed street maps to topographical layouts to lake charts showing bottom features and boat ramps. Fun seekers will also delight in the Geocache Manager, which invites individuals and families to download geocache coordinates from specific Internet sites and use them on such adventures as treasure hunts and coordinated community projects. The manager employs a PC-style file system to keep geocache navigation easy.
Adding to the simplicity are the intuitive keypad and joystick controls, along with the one-button access for particularly important features. Unlike with many GPS systems, it doesn't take an expert to start navigating right away. The full-color display also helps first-time users, as it's easier to differentiate between different map features and data.
Additional features include multilingual communication (choose from English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, Finnish, Portuguese, Dutch, or Norwegian); four navigation screens for viewing speed, direction, distance to destination, and more; and a rechargeable lithium ion battery pack that keeps the eXplorist 500 working for up to 17 hours. Conveniently, users needn't remove the battery to charge it; simply plug the charger directly into the receiver and it renews itself.
What's in the Box eXplorist 500 GPS, rechargeable lithium ion battery pack, warranty card, user's manual.

Magellan eXplorist 600 Water Resistant Hiking GPS Review

Magellan eXplorist 600 Water Resistant Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I believe I read every review on the web and in magazines. It appears they were dichotomous for either a great gadget or junk.
I purchased an explorist 600 and immediately after receving the box I suspected the unit I had was a returned unit by someone else. The unit was not purchased from Amazon.com, rather from an interent company whom guaranteed the product was 100% brand new. I worte an email stating I had doubts about the unit being brand new or it was possibly refurbished, but I would still try to use it.
Immediately, the unit temperature read 518 def F. I was unable to reprogram the temp. Customer service was very polite and able to walk me through a recalibration process. As stated in many reviews, I waited for 1hr and 15 min. I'm glad I had speakerphone. But we solved the problem.
I did not have any problems installing the software or with the computer identifying the SD drive. After loading regions of maps, limited to a region size of 246mb per region, I started experiencing "Checking Media" problems. The unit would cycle and restart during startup into a "checking media" phase. Eventually, the unit would continue doing this and would not work. I called tech support and only waited about 20 min. I spoke with a very polite and helpful person. We performed a hard reset and she gave me her company email if I had anymore problems. Unfortunately, I did. I sent an email stating the problem seemed to be getting worse. Tech support was very prompt in replying to emails, (within 6 hrs). She stated the problem was not common and to return the unit.
I returned the unit to the internet store where I purchased it. After paying shipping to and from, they stated they would send me another unit, but to get the unit faster I should just return the defective unit and order another unit and repay the twenty dollars in shipping again. No thanks. What looked like a bargain in lowest price turned out to be expensive in shipping cost. I declined the second order and purchased the next unit from another company with free shipping, though the unit cost a little more.
The new Explorist 600 unit works flawlessly. It works how one would expect a $350 GPS unit to work. This is my first GPS unit and I think it is very easy to operate. Allow me to list the pros and cons.
Pros:
1) Very easy to use IF you read the directions once through. The rest is intuitive for a novice GPS person.
2) The software (purchased separately) and unit are very accurate for location and details
3) The unit is light-weight and small enough for one hand operation.
4) The satellite lock is very strong, even indoors, in bad weather conditions.
5) Tech support is very helpful and experienced.
6) There are many features including some I have no intention on using.
7) SD card. This is HUGE! I use a 1GB SanDisk. Using Topos 3D USA, a 246mb region is the entire southeast from below VA and as far west as the Mississippi river. The new unit works without error moving from one area to another. I do have to switch detail maps manually when crossing into VA into my north region. Very easily done. I have plenty of room that I could actually cut a region of the map for the entire east coast if the width were narrow enough.
8) The background maps is adequate for general navigation.
Cons:
1) The first unit seemed to be an older firmware version. The new unit is AWESOME. I was seriously considering purchasing the similar garmin unit. After previewing the software for garmin, I noticed several inacuuracy. I also really wanted to have SD capabilities. If you purchase an explorist 600 unit and experience problems, you may have an older unit.
2) Waiting for tech support on the phone is time consuming. Email is great, but make sure you enter info accurately and be polite!!
3) The Map Send V1 Topo USA 3D software is not easily transferred to the unit in terms of direct connect. You must use a conversion program for all map regions, routes, POI's. The program is included, but it is an extra step.
4) As many reviews indicated, the temperature indicator is not 100% accurate. No big deal. I feel it is close enough though after it has been in the environment for a period of time. The purist will have issues though. I do not require the use of an altimeter, so I never use it.
5) The additional software needed to use the unit for back country is expensive ranging $70-$150. Shop around. They sell road software as well, but i would have to research other units if I were to primarily use the unit for highway navigation. The Map Send Topo 3D software is fairly detailed with streets already and I do not anticipate purchasing the road version.
In summary, I would recommend the Explorist 600. You need patience to work through data transfer, but once you do it, it is quite simple. The unit itself is quite easy to use. If the unit starts acting up right away, don't allow a long testing period, send it back and get another one. I hope this helps your decision making.

Complete with 8 MB built-in mapping and unlimited flash-memory expansion, Magellan's eXplorist 600 is one of the first handheld GPS receivers to deliver PC-like file management, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, and a PC application designed specifically for transferring geocache information from the Internet to the eXplorist in case you want to participate in the popular Web-based outdoor activity called geocaching (essentially a treasure hunt where the challenge isn't finding the treasure, it's getting to it).The eXplorist 600 is an ideal GPS guidance tool--both in the city and in the country. It's the first in its class to deliver unlimited SD card memory expansion through a built-in Secure Digital memory card reader/writer. The handheld also provides unlimited storage of waypoints, routes, and track logs via SD card. Any available memory can be used to store whatever you want--a refreshing change from those receivers with fixed and limited waypoint, route, and track-log storage. The exclusive PC-style file-management feature lets you create multiple files, folders, and directories so you can store and navigate information in a PC-like structure. Also a first: the receiver gives you the ability to calculate an area and perimeter simply by marking points on the map screen.Magellan geocaching manager software greatly simplifies geocaching (one of the fastest-growing GPS applications) so you no longer need to print information from a Web site only to have to manually enter the GPS coordinates into your receiver. Instead, you can load that information to your eXplorist so its accessible where it's needed most--to guide you right to cache treasures.A high-speed USB data port lets you upload geocache coordinates and optional maps. Other features include a color transflective TFT screen, a barometer, an altimeter, a thermometer, and a 3-axis electronic compass (which eliminates the need to be in motion to get a direction heading).Despite the eXplorist's wealth of features, it nevertheless resides in a compact, waterproof housing (IPX-7) at a weight of less than 4 ounces for fit-in-your-pocket convenience. The receiver boasts a large, 2.3-inch-diagonal backlit display; built-in maps of major roads, waterways, parks, and airports; the ability to calculate vertical profiles for elevations of roads, and trails; and a WAAS/EGNOS-enabled, 14-parallel-channel GPS receiver that delivers 3-meter accuracy with fast, reliable position fixes. The Magellan eXplorist 600 is compatible with most Magellan MapSend software products (so you can add street detail, topographic data, marine navigation information, and other info), including MapSend Topo 3D USA, MapSend Topo Canada, MapSend Lakes USA, MapSend Worldwide Basemap, and MapSend DirectRoute, plus international titles.

This power adapter does the job. It's neat because it can handle a wide range of voltage inputs. It has a small in-line power box that adjusts the input to fit the needs of the Meridian. The problem I had is that I bought it before realizing the power and the computer connection both use the same strange I/O connector. So if you use this adapter, you can't connect to your laptop. The solution is to buy the more expensive dual cable version that has both battery cord and serial cable attached.

My 8-year old son read an article about Geocaching and really got excited. I wanted to get a GPS handheld that offered great value and ease-of-use. I tried the Garmin eTrex, eTrex Legend, Geko and the Magellan eXplorist 200 (a local Geocaching club let me field test the units) and I downloaded the manuals from the Garmin/Magellan websites and poured over them.
The verdict -- I bought the eXplorist 200. The base map gives you the major freeways, highways, and cities -- even parks and national landmarks. The buttons and functions were the most intuitive of any of the models tested -- very important when you have children operating the unit. The LCD screen is as big as the expensive models and highly legible in ambient light. My son loves it and the entire family is getting lots of hikes and geocaching done in the great outdoors.
What happens next? I will save up for a more powerful unit with a PC connection, map software, etc, now that we are hooked on GPS navigation. The eXplorist will remain with my son -- like cell phones, it is always a good idea to have an extra one around...

Magellan eXplorist 710 Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

Magellan eXplorist 710 Waterproof Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This GPS does so many things its difficult to know where to start. So, I'll start with the negatives...First, the unit comes with Energizer Lithium Ion batteries; unfortunately, the ones I received were dead from the get-go. (Unit wouldn't turn on. Tried some rechargeable batteries, and everything lit up wonderfully.) And on that note, the unit can even optimize itself for alkaline, lithium, or rechargeable batteries, so you're well covered there!
Other slight negatives: it takes several seconds for this to "boot up." It's not horrible, but it's not ideal, either. Also, when the screen gets wet, it's a little difficult to "scroll" through menus (it's touch-screen.) Again, it's not bad enough to worry about - and given touch-screen technology today, it probably cannot be bettered by any competitor.
Now, the actual device: I've never owned a Magellan, always going with Garmin for both handheld/hiking GPS's and car navigation as well. This Magellan is great; the screen is bright and crisp, the menus (for the most part) are simple to navigate and understand without having to go through any manuals. Not just a hiking GPS, it can also give you street directions while driving (though it doesn't have the text-to-speech stuff so it says to "turn right" and not "turn right on Main Street.") The amount of POIs (points of interests) is somewhat staggering: not only main attractions and stores and such that most car navigation GPS's can do, but also water and various "outdoor" attractions. It is seemingly built for handle both hiking and metro areas equally well.
The 3MP camera is nice to have; it produces images clear that look good on-screen, but you won't be printing any glossy landscape scenes with it. (The camera has digital zoom but no flash.) A great add-on to the GPS that isn't obtrusive in any way, so if you want to use your digital SLR instead, you don't even notice the one attached here.
The signal remained very strong on a path about 8 feet wide with tall trees all around; while I haven't tried it in a urban city area (tall buildings, where car GPS's often fail), for outdoor areas, I feel it did quite well. There is somewhat of a heft to the device; you're not going to strap this onto a ball-cap like you can with some of the smaller hand-held GPS's (Geko's, for instance.) But, put into a pocket (mine kept signal inside a jacket pocket) or clamped to a backpack or belt, and you'll appreciate the quality and heft and not really think much about how heavy it really is. (Only a pound or so, but it feels quite solid to just hold it in your hand.)
As far as batter life: I have some 4-year-old rechargeable batteries that I've been using (they're on their way out...don't hold a full charge anymore), and I've got about 4-5 hours of battery life (so far, they're not entirely dead yet.) You can configure the screen to dim itself quickly or wait in bright mode if battery life is paramount and you don't have others (or go into "sleep" mode, where the screen goes off completely, but the unit continues to track your movement.) I've actually made the screen stay bright for some time while I show it off and played with all its features, and, given the batteries I've been using, it's performed quite well.
While I haven't dunked it in water (and don't plan to, on purpose at least), it's held up to quite a bit of rain on a couple mild-to-moderate hikes and hasn't been bothered at all. I wish I could speak more to its many geo-caching features, but I personally don't do that; if you do, I have no doubt that this eXplorist would do the job, and do it well.
Would definitely recommend, perhaps for both a hiking and car navigation GPS, though for car navigation, some kind of dash-holder would be nice so the passenger doesn't have to hold it. A great GPS unit that doesn't seem to have much in the way of competition at all: for consumers, this looks like the best-of-the-best.
