(More customer reviews)Had great hopes for this unit as I'm a Mac user and do a lot traveling, taking 400 pictures a day, all in different locations. My biggest dislike about this tracker is that the buttons, which only use a design symbol as identification, must be pushed in combination and sequences that can cause all the data collected for the day to be deleted if not done properly. That, and the ultra-short battery life, make this a "re-think" for me.

GT-31: Genie GT-31 Waterproof Sport GPS Data Logger with SD Expansion Slot Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this unit to use while windsurfing. The box indicates it is waterproof and that it is mainly used for windsurf. Well, it IS NOT waterproof after you open the cover a few times to access the card . It requires a waterproof pouch that you need to buy extra. If you don't, even traces of water will make it fail, as happened to me after using it less than 7 times, but as usual, just a few days after the warranty expired.
It is not vey user friendly and the manual is pretty poor. Cumbersome to reset max. speed, time sailed, etc. You basically have to reset each variable individually, one by one, that means taking it out of the pouch, etc. etc. Then, the registers of max speed, you have NO IDEA when they happened, if you are looking at recent or old data, etc. etc.
It basically comes without any software. If you want to see your tracks and other information, so it is usable.... yes, you guessed right, you have to buy it extra.
My unit also "froze" while making an action on the card menu. I do not remember if it was during formatting it or while removing it. The unit froze and would not even turn off. I had two options a) Wait two days until the battery died or b) Open the unit to access the battery inside (multiple really small screws, which would likely VOID the warranty....). It sucked, a lose lose situation.
The whole think has a look of old technology. Shortly you will be able to get all this can do in a smart phone with GPS, and much more, it is only a matter of somebody developing the application (maybe somebody already did). You would just put the phone in a pouch and avoid this gadget. Almost useless now, totally useless shortly. Who really wants to use a device in your arm, that you can not see while sailing????? Was it so hard to make something you can wear in your wrist? And that is REALLY waterproof???

(More customer reviews)The GPS in this unit is fast and accurate, which is the primary reason you pay twice what other units cost. It typically takes only a second for the little green light to shine, indicating a lock when outdoors. It has a "hint" button that you can press before entering a building. This will be used if a satellite lock is impossible.
The software supplied with the unit works pretty well. It not only tags the long and lat, it does altitude also. And it will also insert points of interest into your file. It also supports RAW, which is one of the reasons I bought it, by creating XMP sidecar files that Adobe products can use. There are two problems with this, though. The first, and the worst, is that it creates new XMP files; it doesn't insert the geotag data into existing files. That means that after downloading with the Adobe downloader, you have to put off looking at your photos until running the JOBO PhotoGPS program. If you use Bridge or ACR first, your changes are wiped out. This is a major oversight. The next big problem is you MUST have an Internet connection to run the software. It does make sense, because the PhotoGPS program has to query an online database for POI info. However, you cannot disable this. This mean that if you are on safari, etc., you can neither download your GPS data or work with your images. The capacity of the unit is 1024 captures, which means about two days of heavy shooting. It is doubly annoying that the database doesn't include Chile, the place I bought the GPS to work in. And even so, I must be online to geotag. (The database does include the USA, and the database is quite thorough there.)
Lacks: (1) No online manuals. I had to wait to get the product to see how it actually worked. And once I installed the program, it gave me a link to the manual which is on the JOBO website. It should be freely available. (2) No list of areas covered by the data base. (3) The unit's flash drive isn't visible. Again, you must be online for the software to geotag.
Serious problem: As another reviewer said, though the unit will fit cameras with a hot shoe (I have a 5D Mark II), it is quite loose. Sling the camera over your shoulder and the unit goes flying. I've resorted to tape. JOBO should have put some rubber on the foot of the unit or come up with some other securing measure. My unit has already fallen about 5 times, gotten lost in the car twice, and broken open once. Happily, it snapped together.
Good point: When download completes, there will be a KLM file in your tagged directory. You can use this file, so I'm told, with GPS Babel and other programs to do geotagging outside of the supplied software.
Would I recommend it? Yes, with cavets.

WBT-201: Wintec WBT-201 Bluetooth Data Logger GPS Receiver (Auto on/off, WAAS, Bluetooth, USB, Push to Log, Data Logger with Google Earth Integration) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought the Wintec WBT-201 GPS logger because it is recommended by Pierre Bernard, the make of HoudahGeo (a fantastic geocoding app for the Mac), and is supported by several OS X applications. It is a great little device. It's small, is fast to fix its position on startup, and in open areas is deadly accurate. As with any GPS device, I found that in the city with tall buildings all around, it sometimes "drifts" 10 to 20 metres off course. Fortunately, myTracks (another great OS X app) enables me to edit my tracks and correct any significant errors.
The only downside to the Wintec WBT-201 is that the driver and software included with the GPS logger is Windows only. The HoudahGeo site provides a link to a Mac driver which enables a USB connection, and of course the bluetooth feature works fine with a Mac with no extra drivers required. The challenge is in changing the device settings (although fortunately it's not necessary to set up the Wintec WBT-201, as it works fine out of the box). Some determined individuals are working on a Mac version of GTK+ (an open source app for modifying device settings), but there's no easy-to-use version available yet. In my case, I keep an old Windows laptop lying around for just this sort of situation, so I installed the included software on it and adjusted a few settings, including the time interval (default is 1 second, I changed it to 10 seconds), the distance interval and the blink rate for the LED. But don't worry if you don't have access to a Windows system and can't modify the device settings, as the Wintec WBT-201 has plenty of memory to save many hours of track points at 1 second intervals.
Lastly, don't expect much from the manual (or the software). Fortunately, it's not that difficult to figure out how to work the thing, and a bit of searching on the 'net will fill in the gaps. All in all, a highly recommended piece of equipment.
UPDATE (14 March 2009): Don't use the little slot in the corner of the Wintec WBT-201 to attach your device to a backpack, bag, belt loop or whatever. I almost lost mine because the thin strip of metal across the slot broke, releasing the keyring I had put through the slot. I happened to look down at my belt loop, and saw the empty keyring hanging there without the GPS logger. Fortunately, I backtracked my steps and found the Wintec, but you might not be so lucky. Now I keep it in an outside pocket on a messenger bag or backpack, and it works fine.
UPDATE (23 March 2009): I contacted Wintec customer service in Taiwan, and they have offered to replace my WBT-201. The interesting thing is that they say inserting a metal keyring in the slot is an "unsuitable use," and that the slot was designed for a lanyard only (and it is apparently made of plastic, not metal). Of course, this is not explained in the manual that comes with the WBT-201, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has put a metal keyring through the slot. This limitation of the design reduces the usability of the WBT-201, as I'm not sure I want to risk dangling it off my backpack or belt loop, even using a "suitable" lanyard.

WBT-201 is the 2nd generation data logger from Wintec. It is now updated with Atmel-uBlox ATR 0625 chipset to provide excellent sensitivity at -158dBm and 40mA low operating current. In addition, WAAS is now enabled out of box for better accuracy. The new auto on/off mode turns the unit to stand-by mode when there is no Bluetooth activity during navigtion mode. If the unit is in logging mode, then only Bluetooth will turn off.WBT-201 is a multi-function Bluetooth GPS data logger in an ultra compact form factor. The stand-alone track recording function is independent from any host and can be operated with Bluetooth off. Wintec WBT-202 Bluetooth Data Logger GPS Receiver (u-blox5, microSD Slot w/ 1GB MicroSD, Motion sensor) Review

(More customer reviews)as of this writing, there seem to be two main GPS dataloggers that have (1) essentially no user interface aside from status LEDs and a couple of buttons (i.e., the device can just be turned on and will automatically collect position data until turned off) and (2) a "driverless" mode that does not require installation of a USB/serial driver and an OS-dependent data-downloading application (i.e., the device just looks like a USB storage device when connected to any host computer with any operating system). these are the Amod AGL-3080 and the Wintec WBT-202 (the older Wintec units, like the WBT-201, seem to have been discontinued).
the Amod uses the common SiRF-III GPS chipset, has a battery life of around 10-15 hours using 3 AAAs, and saves its data in the standard NMEA-0183 format. as such it's really easy to work with in the field, though the battery life is not always enough for a "working day." my experience is that its TTFF in an urban environment is ok but not great - in a wide open lot it still takes about 2 minutes to get a cold fix, and standing next to a 3-story office building it can often go 10 minutes or longer without a fix.
the Wintec uses the common uBlox-5 GPS chipset, has a battery life of around 20-25 hours using an internal (but replaceable) Li-ion battery, and saves its data in Wintec's proprietary TES format. because of the latter choice, either Wintec's Windows WBT_Tool or an open source application (such as recent releases of gpsbabel) are needed to convert the data to other GPS formats. my experience is that its TTFF in an urban environment is markedly better than the Amod's - i can typically get a cold fix in about 90 seconds standing next to a 3-story office building.
i think both are pretty usable; the Amod is somewhat easier to work with but the Wintec has much better performance. for me, the Wintec is probably more useful.
Additional positives/negatives:
- the Amod firmware has to be reflashed depending on whether you mainly intend to use it for walking or biking/driving. the reason is that the way it does smoothing/filtering of noisy position data is different at different speeds, and there is no way to set this other than reflashing. WBT_Tool sets this kind of configuration for the Wintec. both the Amod reflashing tool and the Wintec WBT_Tool are Windows-only.
- the Wintec comes with a 1GB microSD card, so its out-of-the-box storage is much larger. this can be expanded to 2GB (but not larger). note that the microSD card also provides an additional, physical way to get data off of the device.
- the Amod comes with a solid Velcro-closed strap (that goes into a solid strap-slot on the case) so it really can be hung safely off of a bag strap or carabiner hook. the Wintec case has a really tiny and weak slot for a string-style strap (not included). it really wants to go into a mesh pocket or something.

I've been pleasantly surprised how easy it has been to use multiple functions; the interface is surprisingly mature for such a gadget.
It easily and automatically logs tracks in internal memory and/or SD card at rates up to 1/sec, or after you've traveled a given distance. You can download tracks in google earth format and show grandma where you kayaked, then forgot to turn it off and drove home, and then had your son strap it on his bike for a ride: [...]
Trip odometer/speedometer functions are good. The "speed genie" shows your speeds automatically when you exceed a certain amount, so you don't even have to set it to the right mode before taking off -- just turn it on and it will both track and show your speed.
Battery life is excellent; using it an hour or so most days, I can go for weeks without worrying about charging.
I've even used it in the car by uploading routes from google maps using the supplied software and setting it to beep at me when I approach my turns. (Now, if only it had different beeps for right and left turns...)

(More customer reviews)I purchased this item to track my movements and sync those movements to my photos. I use a Macintosh Pro Laptop and iPhoto with Places enabled. I have not used the PC software included so I can not speak to that. You charge the unit using your USB cable. Holding the button down on the side starts the tracking. The USB rubber cover is ridiculous. I have to have my wife around to open the thing. It is very difficult and I may end of taking it off eventually. I attach it to my keychain and slip it into my pocket. The unit says it will track for 12 hours. I have not gone over that limit. When you get back to the computer, you have to download the data. I use a freeware Mac program called HoudahGPS. [...] You can download the tracking data and the KML version which lets you see your tracks right in Google Earth. I then use HoudahGEO to sync my photos with the tracking information. If the time on the camera is accurate, the photos are tagged with the location Meta Data. It seems very accurate, within a few feet when off, and more often than not, right on. Not having to make notes for my photos had made this worth the price. This summer my wife and I will be driving Route 66 and I am looking forward to posting an electronic photo journal on line. The Geo data also uploads to Flikr and Facebook. When you're done, you just erase the data, charge the unit up and you are ready to go again.
