Sun City and the surrounding town have doubled in size in the last five years, but Street Atlas has not added a single new street to the area in that time. Also, mislabeled roads have not been corrected.
I returned it to Delorme.

Garmin US TOPO 24K Topographical Maps of Washington and Oregon (microSD/SD Card) Review

(More customer reviews)This software was purchased to be used with the Garmin Rino 530HCX units, but this review may apply to other units as well, so beware.
First to note: You can only use this on one unit, and you are not able to backup the software for safekeeping or for use on more than one unit if you happen to own more than one. One card per unit. If you overwrite it, you loose it. You cannot use this card for viewing on your computer, or back it up for safekeeping. It has a lock code that prevents you from using it in any manner but inserting it into the gps unit. Technical support will not help you with this issue.It does not state any of this on the box. It is a micro SD card with an adapter, so it is small.
Second: On the Rino 530HCX, this product only gives the elevation contour of the area, with roads and some trails. No DEM shading, no 3-D modeling, etc. These limitations are not noted on or in the box, or anywhere on the Garmin website. Technical support said the flat contour map may be more detailed than the US topo map on CD, but they were not specific as to the differences, if any.
I visited the Garmin website, and it did say it had limited capability, and gave a few examples:
From the Garmin website:
" "Limited capability" may mean that a unit may be able to draw all the map features from the MapSource software, such as roads, lakes, nav-aids, depth contours, wrecks, etc., but the interactive capability of the maps may be limited. For example, you may not be able to "find nearest marinas" or look up additional text about a specific mapping feature. "
So before you purchase this product, or any other software product of this nature from Garmin, realize that they may not be fully disclosing all of the pertinent information.

I have only had it for a little over a month now and only used it in the local state, it already saved my time/gas twice big time...I will bring it to my mini-vacation this weekend to see how it goes...

(More customer reviews)I bought this product for hikes and to guide me in navigating rivers. Only very major roads are named so I can't use this very easily to calculate my route there. Most roads are there but they just vanish at some points and reappear in others. Using a real topo map it is immediately obvious that these same roads do not dissapear and in fact continue on their course uninteruppted like a road should. The elevations and detail are very course. No trails are shown. I am not very happy I bought this product and am going to look into the roads and recreation to see if it does a better job. FYI I bought this to use with my Etrex Legend which I think is just great.

Garmin's United States TOPO MapSource CD-ROM is similar to U.S. Geological Survey 1:100,000-scale topographic paper maps. Garmin TOPO Topographical Maps (Canada) Review

I searched around Jasper National Park and Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, and couldn't find *any* trails in this map set at any level of zoom or detail. If you're used to the US Topo maps by Garmin, you'll be disappointed. The disks I received from Amazon said "Version 2.0", which were ordered in August, 2007.

National Geographic TOPO National Parks Explorer 3D Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this product to make a few maps in preparation for a backpacking trip (I wanted maps that showed a day of hiking and the elevation profile to go with it). It took some coaxing and a whole lot of trial-and-error printing to get maps very close to what I wanted.
I found the printing feature to be difficult to use and poorly documented. I also came away with the impression that though I'd learned how to use the program while working with it to print these maps, the printing is unpredictable so I expect that the next time I use it will involve much of the same trial-and-error guess work
I would recommend this product to anyone who is planning on going to a number of these parks (it's cheaper than buying separate maps for each park) and anyone who wants very specific hiking maps because it is possible to make such maps using this program. If you want to use the fancy map paper, it's probably a good idea to print drafts on regular paper to get the map you want.
Also, before you use the program download the update from the software website. The program doesn't work well without the update.

TOPO National Geographic USGS Topographic Maps (Arizona) Review

(More customer reviews)UPDATE 1/1/08: I just got a Mac after always previously using Windows. Great news--when I installed this 4.0 software, not only did it work fine, but it also corrected the two most serious objections I previously had with it. I now have no problems importing waypoints from my Garmin GPSmap 60CSx, and the software is now compatible with all the states I own from the previous Version 3 software. I don't know whether this is unique to Mac or whether it now works just as well with Windows, but when I did the installation, it automatically went to the National Geographic web site and downloaded a software update. I still give it 4 stars because of some of the other non-standard user interface choices, but these are easy enough to get used to. I didn't change the rest of the review, so keep this update in mind as you read it.
National Geographic topo maps are great if your understand their strengths and limitations (I have the Nevada version but they all work the same). First, don't expect to import the actual maps into a GPS receiver. These maps are raster-scanned directly from USGS 7.5' topos; GPS receivers use vector-graphic maps that are only available from your receiver's manufacturer (and they are much less detailed than NG maps). But you should never expect your GPS receiver's display to completely replace a paper map anyway. It's too small to show much detail, and if your receiver fails, you'd be out of luck. NOTE: Magellan has just introduced the Triton series, which is the first product designed to import maps from Topo!. This is a great advancement, but I haven't yet evaluated it to see how well it works.
Since these are based on USGS maps, they have the same high quality including tons of detail, but since many USGS maps are more than 10 years old, you won't necessarily get up-to-date information. Since topographic features don't ordinarily change as frequently as man-made features, you're usually OK, but keep this in mind.
These maps allow you do a lot of other things with your GPS. You can create waypoints on the computer, either by placing a marker on the map or by entering in the latitudes and longitudes of your points, then transferring them to the GPS. This is much easier than manually entering the info through your GPS user interface. You can also download tracks from your GPS receiver onto the map to see where you've been. And you can draw intended journeys directly on the map screen, then measure the distance and elevation profile of the route. The elevation profile is a bit noisy, but you get a pretty good idea of how much elevation change you'll experience on a hike. The tool you use to draw the route on the screen could benefit from an improved user interface, but with a little practice you can get pretty good at it. If you make a mistake, hold down the right mouse button to erase the error. One thing I like is that you can print out a custom paper map, and if you print using your inkjet on NG's waterproof paper, you can get a custom color map that really is waterproof. This latest edition is designed to work with USB receivers like the Garmin GPSMap 60-series. This is a tremendous advantage compared to the previous edition. BUT please note that it isn't completely compatible with the new GPSMap60CSx. It doesn't import waypoint names properly, they end up being simple numbers starting at 001. For some reason this isn't a problem with the older GPSMap60Cs.
The main objection I have is that it isn't easily compatible with the previous edition. In my case, I had the prior edition for California, and expected the California CDs to work with the new software. But for some reason they don't. So I have to leave the old edition installed for the California maps and the new one for Nevada maps. Fortunately I can use the USB capability of the Nevada software to download the California waypoints and tracks from my 60CSx. I then have to save the .tpo file, launch the old edition software and pull up the California map, then import the .tpo file. Very inconvenient, but at least there is a way to make it work. I guess they would prefer I buy a new edition of the California maps.
The only other thing to note is that they still haven't completely adopted Windows user interface conventions. For example, there are no scroll bars on the side and bottom of the map to allow you to move the map on your screen. You have to move your cursor to the edge of the map, watch for the cursor to change to an arrow, and hold down the mouse button. The direction of scroll depends on exactly where on the screen your cursor is. Another observation is that there is no EDIT menu, so I can't easily cut and paste data into other applications. But these are relatively small concerns that you can quickly adapt to. All in all this is a very valuable tool that I highly recommend.

Navman GPS e Series for Notebook Computers with USB connectors Review

(More customer reviews)I have a dream: a super car navigation system based on my laptop. This is the reason why I couldn't wait to rush to the nearest Micro Center to buy a Navman e series when I knew a laptop based GPS is available.
However, the following days proved to be a nightmare and challenge to my intelligence and patience. The USB GPS driver crashed my system a hundred of times. It does not support XP well. Note that my XP platform used to be so stable that I can run application servers, such as Oracle and Weblogic, without interruptions. To make things worse, the USB GPS is not compatible with most third party software.
I am not the kind of guy who gives up easily. The following two weeks I tried my best to fit the Navman into a position in my final goal: the super car navigation system. As an experienced software engineer, I managed to narrow down problems caused by the new device. I searched their support site to download patches and new drivers. Unfortunately, the solution only relieves the problem a little bit. I contacted supports from both Streets Finder and Navman. Their totally ignorance drains my patience quickly. I even exhausted third party software and related discussion groups to try to find a work around.
As to the software part, I didn't waste any time on StreetsFinder. If Navman still has its value in their products, StreetFinder is totally useless. You have to connect to internet to find a direction on your way in the car or download it in advance. Suppose you have 10 points on your map, if you want to find direction between each pair of the points, you have to download 45 directions from a website and store them onto your software before hitting onto the road!
Finally I got so exhausted and reached the decision: I have to switch to other products. I am happy now with the decision. The followings are some quick facts and comparison of the different solutions:
A) GM 210 $150 + MapPoint $240 + AGPS $10: expensive but almost 100% functionalities
B) GM 210 + Streets and Maps $40: 70% functionalities
C) Navman + StreetsFinder: 40% functionalities of my dream navigation system

Garmin MapSource 2008 Topographical U.S. Map DVD-Rom Review

(More customer reviews)First, I'm not knocking the TOPO US too much. It is expensive and does not have high resolution but it fills a niche. If you need a TOPO map in a hurry, I suppose it is the best alternative.
I've had my Garmin Legend HCx for several months now. During this time, I've hunted for a reliable alternative to TOPO US, rendering 24K resolution and not limited to a few National Parks.
Looking really paid off. The best solution that I've found is the following:
* Free Maps from USGS Seamless Server (24K TOPOs as GeoTiff files) $0
* Any graphics editor program that can handle .tif format$0
* Mapwell (Basic) Google to find(includes raster/vector conversion) $45
* TrackMaker (free version) Google to find $0

Total: $45
Process:
1. Search, select, download GeoTiff map from USGS Seamless Server (15 minutes)
NOTE ADDED 4/2010: Mapwell Basic can now read coordinates on GeoTiff files, making steps 2,3, and part of 4 obsolete.
2. Review the .xml data, downloaded with the map to determine the extent of the map: Northwest and Southeast boundary. (5 minutes)
3. Open GeoTiff file in graphics editor. Save as new .tif file, stripping out the embedded geo data. (5 minutes)
4. Open the new .tif file in Mapwell. Add extent information from Step 2. Add graphics features and waypoints(optional). Run vectorization option, creating a new set of Garmin IMG files (10 minutes - more if you want to add your own art)
5. Upload new map set into Garmin. Mapwell has a great Garmin upload/download manager. No need to use Mapsource although you can use it to add Mapsource maps. (1 minute)
Time burned: 36 minutes
TrackMaker (free version or licensed) is also a great product for creating tracks, waypoints, many more features. It also has a fine Garmin upload/download manager. So you can either load waypoints and features directly into the Garmin or embed them in the map itself while using Mapwell.
The only disadvantage that I've discovered in the process is that Mapwell works too well. That is, the vectorization of 24K maps produces superb quality maps that take 10-20 seconds to render in the Garmin (at 1 mile). The closer in you go, the faster the rendering.

Garmin eTrex Vista C Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

(More customer reviews)I've own the original Garmin Vista and currently own the high end Garmin 60CS.
I was expecting the Vista C to be just a colored version of the original vista but I was wrong it's actually the little brother of the 60CS. OS, feature and hardware wise it's like the 60CS in a smaller Vista package.
the Vista C is a HUGE improvement over the original vista. it's faster, better screen, better battery life, seems to track satellite better and faster. TONS of features. It works almost the same way and have same features as the more epxensive and bigger 60CS.
the "click stick" is not as easy to use as the dpad on the garmin 60CS. sometimes when I want to press in on the stick it would go left or right. and the button are not that "nice and easy" to press. tho there are "shortcuts" with the buttons like on the 60CS. it's not really that bad, just not as easy and initituive as the 60CS because it has less buttons. I'm use to and familiar with the way the 60CS work so it took me only about 30 minutes to figure how they assign the buttons. but for someone new it will probably take an hour or two to learn the buttons and shortcuts.
if you're use to the easier button interfac of the 60CS you won't like the buttons of the vista C as much. Pro
- alot faster than the original vista & about same speed as the 60CS (perhap same cpu?)
- updated OS and interface as the 60cs.
- Color screen is easier to read even in daylight than the original Vista.
- USB port
- External antenna port.
- all the software features and hardware of the bigger 60CS in a smaller package.

- screen is kinda small so incar navigation is not as easy to read like the 60cs (but to it's credit it's not meant for car navigation)

Magellan GPS 310 1.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

(More customer reviews)The Magellan 310 holds 100 waypoints in memory. Higher priced units hold 500, but since I am not a "world traveler" 100 is fine with me. The unit does not come with an NMEA cable to connect to a PC, but Magellan will send you one free if you pay the 5 dollar shipping charge. The owners manual explains all of the features of the unit in sufficient detail that even I can operate it.
The manual is overly pessimistic in regard to the time the unit takes to "fix" a location. The manual says 2 to 5 minutes for a location fix, but I get a "lock" in 30 to 50 seconds most of the time. Sitting on my sofa, in front of a window, the unit obtained a postion fix in 45 seconds with the venetian blinds only partially open. Venturing into a desert canyon the unit performed even faster. With most of the horizon blocked by the canyon walls the 310 locked in a postion fix in 30 seconds.
The 310 also performed well in a moving car, with the unit propped up on top of the dashboard. In the moving car the 310 maintained a lock on enough satellites to register speed of travel and a working "North" arrow.
It doesn't have the bells, whistles, moving maps, etc. of the higher priced units, but it does what I wanted it to do when I bought it.

Just make sure you have a older computer to use with a serial port, or you have to buy a cable to fit to this one that plugs into a hsb port.

You can count on this receiver not receiving anything if you have any amount of trees, buildings, or less-than-perfect weather conditions. In a vehicle in the most perfect conditions it only manages about four satellites, and that's with a clear sky and no surroundings. Please try to stay away from this GPS receiver.

Garmin Oregon 300 Portable GPS System Review

(More customer reviews)I read some of the comments about the problems with the Oregon, but I think they were played down. I went from a 60csx to an Oregon 300.
I use my handheld gps for backpacking, day hikes, and street navigation.
Oregon pluses I noticed:
1) 3d view shows elevation even in street mode
2) shaded relief
3) touch screen
4) smaller size
5) screen lock feature is nice
6) sat initial lock is very fast and strong
6) Battery life is pretty good for a touch screen. Lithium batteries will get you about 15 hours.
Oregon negatives:
On the map screen you have the option of two fields or no fields
1)can not flip from screen to screen without exiting to the main menu and then selecting the other screen ( seems like they could just let you slide you finger left or right at the bottom of the screen to go to the next or previous screens. The do basically this on the main menu screen.
2)battery meter does not read correctly
3)car power adapter that is recommended by Garmin is not correct. I has a 90 degree turn that is the wrong way. Works but is not correct.
4)No preview of your pending turn when the system beeps to let you know a turn is coming.
5)If you are on another page other than the map page you get a beep warning that a turn is coming but no preview. You just see the page you are on at that time.
6)should you miss your turn the Oregon is sporadic regarding how fast it will correct your path. Maybe immediately maybe a few blocks, maybe never.
7)Can not manually stop, edit, or recalculate your route from the map screen, you must exit the map screen to the main menu then go to active route screen.
8)Screen is very dim. In full sunlight you can not see the screen to read it. I light cloud cover it is hard to read.
9)Not many search options. With the Garmin 60CSX you can search by almost any criteria you can think of.
10) You can not customize the Oregon much, 60csx you could customize everything.
Bottom line: If you have not had a gps before or you have had a low end unit you will like it. If you have had a high end unit like a Garmin 60csx you will be disappointed.
I returned mine and got another 60csx.

WBT-201: Wintec WBT-201 Bluetooth Data Logger GPS Receiver (Auto on/off, WAAS, Bluetooth, USB, Push to Log, Data Logger with Google Earth Integration) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought the Wintec WBT-201 GPS logger because it is recommended by Pierre Bernard, the make of HoudahGeo (a fantastic geocoding app for the Mac), and is supported by several OS X applications. It is a great little device. It's small, is fast to fix its position on startup, and in open areas is deadly accurate. As with any GPS device, I found that in the city with tall buildings all around, it sometimes "drifts" 10 to 20 metres off course. Fortunately, myTracks (another great OS X app) enables me to edit my tracks and correct any significant errors.
The only downside to the Wintec WBT-201 is that the driver and software included with the GPS logger is Windows only. The HoudahGeo site provides a link to a Mac driver which enables a USB connection, and of course the bluetooth feature works fine with a Mac with no extra drivers required. The challenge is in changing the device settings (although fortunately it's not necessary to set up the Wintec WBT-201, as it works fine out of the box). Some determined individuals are working on a Mac version of GTK+ (an open source app for modifying device settings), but there's no easy-to-use version available yet. In my case, I keep an old Windows laptop lying around for just this sort of situation, so I installed the included software on it and adjusted a few settings, including the time interval (default is 1 second, I changed it to 10 seconds), the distance interval and the blink rate for the LED. But don't worry if you don't have access to a Windows system and can't modify the device settings, as the Wintec WBT-201 has plenty of memory to save many hours of track points at 1 second intervals.
Lastly, don't expect much from the manual (or the software). Fortunately, it's not that difficult to figure out how to work the thing, and a bit of searching on the 'net will fill in the gaps. All in all, a highly recommended piece of equipment.
UPDATE (14 March 2009): Don't use the little slot in the corner of the Wintec WBT-201 to attach your device to a backpack, bag, belt loop or whatever. I almost lost mine because the thin strip of metal across the slot broke, releasing the keyring I had put through the slot. I happened to look down at my belt loop, and saw the empty keyring hanging there without the GPS logger. Fortunately, I backtracked my steps and found the Wintec, but you might not be so lucky. Now I keep it in an outside pocket on a messenger bag or backpack, and it works fine.
UPDATE (23 March 2009): I contacted Wintec customer service in Taiwan, and they have offered to replace my WBT-201. The interesting thing is that they say inserting a metal keyring in the slot is an "unsuitable use," and that the slot was designed for a lanyard only (and it is apparently made of plastic, not metal). Of course, this is not explained in the manual that comes with the WBT-201, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has put a metal keyring through the slot. This limitation of the design reduces the usability of the WBT-201, as I'm not sure I want to risk dangling it off my backpack or belt loop, even using a "suitable" lanyard.
