Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx ClearTouch Anti-Glare Screen Protector (Single Pack) Review

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx ClearTouch Anti-Glare Screen Protector (Single Pack)

I seldom write reviews, but I really wanted to share my experience with the ClearTouch protector on my Garmin 60CSx. The protector fits well and protects well when first applied, but mine began lifting at the corners and then pealing off after about two months. I couldn't resolve the problem by reconditioning (washing in warm water). This happened to me twice. Considering the $12 price of a single protector, this makes no economic sense. I've had a different brand protector on my PDA for years and never seen anything like this.

Garmin LakeMaster CD-ROM for Garmin GPS Units, Minnesota Review

Pros:
The maps provide good contours, even in the boundary waters and small lakes that you wouldn't expect. Excellent 1 foot contours are available on popular lakes.
Cons:
I really didn't realize that I'd only be able to use this with just one unit. So, don't install this on your old GPS, because you're not able to transfer the maps to another unit. I think the sd card version solves this problem since you can just migrate it to other units.

Garmin City Navigator North America for Detailed Maps of the United State, Canada and Mexico (DVD) Review

Garmin City Navigator North America for Detailed Maps of the United State, Canada and Mexico (DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The software is OK, but not great. Other reviews mention its limitations and shortcomings. The main problem is that the unlock process is complex and has draconian restrictions. You don't get an unlock code with the product. Instead you get a certificate with an 8 digit code. Then submit this 8 digit code, in combination with a serial number for a GPS unit, to Garmin in order to obtain a 25 digit unlock key. Finally you enter the 25 digit unlock key. (Got all that?) Since you can't use the maps on a PC unless you also enter the serial number for a portable device, you can't buy this software just for PC use.
Garmin makes good products and I've been a longtime customer. Between work and home I own 7 of their units. But I'm losing my loyalty to them because they're constantly nickel-and-diming us for updates and making us jump through crazy hoops. Avoid this product unless you REALLY need the updated maps (which are not truly up-to-date, as others have mentioned). Instead try finding the old MetroGuide, which was much more user friendly.
Being a software developer myself I can sympathize with Garmin's concern for piracy. But they need to weigh that against the burden they are putting on honest users. I regret buying this product and will start looking at other vendors for my home and business GPS applications.

available all over in the low to mid $200 range.
i have the 120 also. great for motorcycling with wife. between communication n decent gps
(neither great alone, one futzes with the optimal performance of the other, but not enough for me not to stay with the rino model come upgrade time) i think its a usefull product.
UNLESS i get around to getting a cell phone. my wifes has bluetooth w/cordless headset,as does my son.that makes the best person to per talking setup ive seen,,gps too!
only thing missing, and for motorcycling or backpacking is the "friend location finder" rite there on the rino screen.
say she is having a problem with the rite channel or whatever,,i can still "see her" on my screen and find her.
it happened once, and we hooked up in less than 20 minutes..we were on the highway, and she took a exit,by the time i turned around and got to her exit,i could find her down the road. we lost sight of each other, and she thought i was way up ahead of her,but i was just a bit in front, but hidden by a truck,i saw her turn off in my mirror, and ya ya ya,,found her in no time.
also great i think is at the fair for handing to one of the kids. then if they arent talking,,you can still find/see them.
they are a bit pricy though. i wonder why no one else hasnt tried to make a similar one??

The the most feature-rich device in the Rino family, Garmin's Rino 130 (bilingual edition) 2-way FRS/GMRS radio and GPS receiver comes fully loaded with an electronic compass, a barometric sensor, a weather receiver for 7 NOAA weather channels, and 24 MB of internal memory for downloading and storing MapSource detail--including data from products like U.S. Topo 24K, U.S. Topo, Recreational Lakes, BlueChart, and MetroGuide (MapSource products sold separately). The Rino 130 is also outfitted with a marine-point database and a basemap of North and South America. The database includes nautical navaids for North and South America. The Americas Highway basemap includes the United States, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Central and South America, and covers an area from W180 to W30 Longitude and S60 to N75 Latitude. Also included is a high-level worldwide map with political boundaries and major cities. Among many other included elements are oceans, rivers, and lakes (greater than 30 square miles), principal cities and many smaller cities and towns, major interstates and principal highways, and political boundaries (state and international borders). The Rino 130 also offers 10,000 tracklogs versus 2,048 with the Rino 120. The 130 also comes ready with amassive 24 MB of memory unlike the Rino 120 with 8MB. Lastly the 130 shines with the very useful electronic compass, altimeter, glide ratio, glide ratio to destination, and vertical speed to destination features that the Rino 120 lacks.
Integration has its advantages: the Rino 130 sends and receives GPS locations using FRS channels and shows them on the map. The GPS device is a 12-channel, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver. WAAS, which stands for Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), is the global-positioning-system of choice for mariners. The handheld's built-in electronic compass give a heading while you're standing still, and its barometric altimeter provides accurate elevation and pressure readings to help you identify and analyze weather conditions.
The Rino 130 also provides two-way radio communication with a transmission range of up to two miles using FRS channels and up to five miles with GMRS (be aware that use of GMRS requires an FCC license). The integration of two-way radio and GPS lets you transmit your position with a simple button press, so others can easily navigate to your position. The Rino 130 also has a polling feature so you can manually request GPS location information from other Rino units.
You get 14 FRS channels, 8 GMRS channels, and 8 GMRS repeater channels, as well as 38 sub-audible squelch codes per transmission channel for semi-private radio communications.
The unit's ergonomic design grants single-handed operation, with its Call, Page mode, and Press-To-Talk (PTT) buttons mounted on the side, Power/Backlighting button on top, Volume and Zoom buttons on front, and a Thumb Stick positioned in the center. The thumb stick allows channel selection and volume adjustment in FRS/GMRS mode, as well as quick map panning, enter, and selection functions in GPS mode.
Other features include a backlit display (160 x 160 pixels), external voice activation (VOX), waterproof construction to IPX-7 standards (immersible in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes), storage for up to 500 waypoints with graphic identification and 20 reversible routes, 10,000 trackpoints and up to 20 saved tracks to retrace your path or a companion's path via the location-reporting feature, trip computer with speed tracking, sunrise/sunset read out, trip time, and trip distance, and multiple grid formats including MGRS and Loran TD. The Rino 130 even sends and receives short text notes for quiet communication.
The Rino 130 has a battery life of 14 hours (typical use) on 3 AA alkaline batteries (not included).

The WAAS differenceWAAS is a system of satellites and ground stations that provide GPS signal corrections, giving you even better position accuracy. How much better? Try an average of up to five times better. A WAAS-capable receiver can give you a position accuracy of better than three meters 95 percent of the time. And you don't have to purchase additional receiving equipment or pay service fees to utilize WAAS.
How it Works WAAS consists of approximately 25 ground reference stations positioned across the United States that monitor GPS satellite data. Two master stations, located on either coast, collect data from the reference stations and create a GPS correction message. This correction accounts for GPS satellite orbit and clock drift plus signal delays caused by the atmosphere and ionosphere. The corrected differential message is then broadcast through one of two geostationary satellites, or satellites with a fixed position over the equator. The information is compatible with the basic GPS signal structure, which means any WAAS-enabled GPS receiver can read the signal.
Who benefits from WAAS? Currently, WAAS satellite coverage is only available in North America. There are no ground reference stations in South America, so even though GPS users there can receive WAAS, the signal has not been corrected and thus would not improve the accuracy of their unit. For some users in the U.S., the position of the satellites over the equator makes it difficult to receive the signals when trees or mountains obstruct the view of the horizon. WAAS signal reception is ideal for open land and marine applications. WAAS provides extended coverage both inland and offshore compared to the land-based DGPS (differential GPS) system. Another benefit of WAAS is that it does not require additional receiving equipment, while DGPS does. What's in the Box Rino 130 receiver, a PC-interface cable, a wrist strap, a belt clip, a user's manual, and a quick-reference guide.

Garmin Rino 520 14-Mile 22-Channel Waterproof FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio and GPS Navigator Review

Garmin Rino 520 14-Mile 22-Channel Waterproof FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio and GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the longest time, I resisted geting a GPS. Any soldier worth his stripes should be able to figure out his ground position to within 100m just by comparing the ground to his map, and maybe shooting a bearing with his compass.
But then I picked up a cheapie Garmin Etrex, and while it doesn't replace the map and terrain reading skills (by a long shot) the ability to generate an exact position fix at a moment's notice comes in very handy, especially when one is operating in an unfamilliar area. GPS may be a crutch, but it is an *effective* crutch.
There were a few small problems with the Etrex though. It was very sensitive to sky view, such that it often lost signal inside a vehicle unless it was on the dash. It didn't do mapping, and it would eat AA batteries at a ferocious rate. With the newer, fancier units on the market, I started thinking about upgrading.
Many of the troops in my unit have Rino 120 FRS/GPS units. It can be handy to have an additional means of communication other than the issue radios, and the position reporting function was interesting, so I bought a Rino 520 - specifically a 520 vice a 530 because of reports of better battery life, and the extra geegaws on the 530 didn't seem to have much practical purpose.
Wow!
1) The 520 has tons of memory, such that I could upload topo maps for every area I was likely to operate in and still have room to spare. The detail and accuracy has been outstanding, and having street names (which the issue 1:50k maps lack) has been a godsend.
2) It is much less sensitive to sky cover than the Etrex was. It'll still lose signal if (say) stuffed in a glovebox, but it'll work on your lap in a vehicle, where the Etrex would not.

3) The "breadcrumb" track mapping means I can record everywhere I go, and then download the tracks to my computer later via Mapsource - which can then be overlaid on satellite imagery via Google Earth (which has already proven useful in proving that I was at a certain place at a certain time)
4) The routing function and the turn-by-turn instructions were recently tested on a 900km road move, and worked - although the unit made a couple of odd suggestions, and I think it may have been hampered by not having detail maps loaded for the entire route.
5) It has a nifty "alarm clock" mode, where you set the alarm, and the unit shuts off - and then turns itself on and screeches at the appropriate time. Cool!
6) The data pages are customizable, meaning you can set up pages that contain just the info you need.
7) The radio and position location/transmit functions work exactly as advertised. I don't yet have a good feel for the max range of the radio (even in 5W mode) but it's not huge. The speaker gets all distorted at max volume, but when used with an earbud it is just fine. My gut tells me the radio is fair to good.
8) The only real concern I've had has been battery life and the fact that it uses a proprietary batty pack that must be recharged from wall current - which can be tough to find sometimes. But so far, battery life has been exceptional (a three day exercise with heavy radio use only dropped to 60%, and a 2-day road move with the radio turned off finished at 90% used) and an add-on pack that uses normal AA batteries (at the cost of dropping max transmit power to 2W) is availible.
Overall, this is a great unit, and highly recommended.
DG

Magellan GPS 310 1.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Magellan GPS 310 1.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Magellan 310 holds 100 waypoints in memory. Higher priced units hold 500, but since I am not a "world traveler" 100 is fine with me. The unit does not come with an NMEA cable to connect to a PC, but Magellan will send you one free if you pay the 5 dollar shipping charge. The owners manual explains all of the features of the unit in sufficient detail that even I can operate it.
The manual is overly pessimistic in regard to the time the unit takes to "fix" a location. The manual says 2 to 5 minutes for a location fix, but I get a "lock" in 30 to 50 seconds most of the time. Sitting on my sofa, in front of a window, the unit obtained a postion fix in 45 seconds with the venetian blinds only partially open. Venturing into a desert canyon the unit performed even faster. With most of the horizon blocked by the canyon walls the 310 locked in a postion fix in 30 seconds.
The 310 also performed well in a moving car, with the unit propped up on top of the dashboard. In the moving car the 310 maintained a lock on enough satellites to register speed of travel and a working "North" arrow.
It doesn't have the bells, whistles, moving maps, etc. of the higher priced units, but it does what I wanted it to do when I bought it.

Pharos Traveler GPS 505 Sport GPS Review

Pharos Traveler GPS 505 Sport GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've only owned the 505 for about a week now. It's a great deal when you consider you get a functional GPS with software for all of the US and Canada and Pocket PC all in one unit. The beauty of the Pocket PC over a normal GPS is that you have great flexibility in the GPS software you use with it - and thus a competitive market - in addition to having all of the other advantages of a Pocket PC (MP3 player, multimedia, Outlook, Word, etc).
The 505 came packed with some nice extras: a flexible, suction cup car holder, a car charger, a 120v power supply and a mini USB cord. It uses the mini USB access port for both charging and information transfer(you can set an option on the Pocket PC to charge the unit directly from the computer).
The unit itself seems to be very well built and has a removable battery. Battery life seems good so far. The only PPC I've owned in the past was a source of frustration for me in that everytime it was reset or the battery ran out it would lose all of its memory. This unit appears to have internal flash RAM as well as flash ROM so it retains its memory even when its reset although it does lose its connection with whatever it was pulling from the SD card (the battery has yet to run out on me so I can't vouch for that). I've seen some reports that the unit is waterproof but I don't see how that could be considering all of the potential places water could get in. The screen is nice sized and can be viewed in either landscape or portrait with the push of a button. The GPS (based on the much vaunted Sirfstar III chip) consistently picks up the signal quickly and even indoors depending on where you're at (maybe not so much in the basement).
The software: Ostia 7.5. I've read a lot of complaints about the Ostia software and was wondering if I'd have to replace it on buying the unit. One should draw a distinction between problems with the software and the data. So far the software has been pretty flawless (it hasn't frozen up much at all but don't forget that you're also dealing with Windows Mobile) and the data has been spot-on. The software has a lot of options for adjustments (two different 3D views and one overhead view, zoom in and out, etc). I think the data may be dependent on where its collected. So far I've used it in the Seattle and Vancouver BC areas and found it to be very accurate (the Point of Interest data in BC was much more limited than in Seattle). A couple of suggestions I would have for the software: a record of distance traveled and an address search capability that could be begun from a user selected portion of the address. Example: I had 3 different map segments open that covered ground from Olympia, WA to Southern BC (an area of approximately 30,000 square miles and 7-9 million people) and was only able to search for an address using this format: house #, street, city. My search for "7th Ave" timed out the system because there were so many 7th Avenues in so many towns to contemplate. When I closed all but one of the 3 mapsand conducted the search I was able to find my target almost instantly. Had I been able to search by city first I could have left all of my maps open.
All in all, it seems to have been a very good choice. I'll let you know if my initial impressions are confirmed later on.

Lowrance iFinder Go2 Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

Lowrance iFinder Go2 Waterproof Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a newbie to GPS and there is definitely a learning curve. The Lowrance manual that comes with the unit is excellent to getting you started quickly, but you absolutely must get the advanced manual, available on-line at lowrance.com, to really enjoy the features. It does take some study and practice, but it is worth the effort, it is not that bad and the unit is (to me) impressive. It does not have street-by-street navigation, and it doesn't talk to me, but units that do cost $hundreds more. When I am in my car, it is quite usable; otherwise, street-by-street navigation is unnecessary anyway. I have recommended this unit to family, and feature-for-feature, I thought it was the best value of all the units I found in its price range. It quickly locates the satellites, often faster than the documentation would suggest, and I have found it remarkable that it has maintained the signals in very improbable situations. It is much more sensitive and reliable than I expected after reading another review that complained about signal acquisition and maintenance; I have no comlaints whatsoever about that.
I do admit that when I get the extra available $$ I may get a color street-by-street unit that talks to me; it would be safer in an urban environment while driving, but I really don't need it. I would also like a slightly larger screen for when I don't have my glasses.
A couple of words about service. It is a truism that modern solid-state electronics either fails very quickly or lasts a long long time. I had a defective unit and it failed during the first couple of weeks. (This also underscores the importance of putting it to a lot of use, testing out its features etc., to give it a good burn-in). Call to service was easy, the technicians clearly knowledgeable and when it was discovered that the problem couldn't be handled over the phone authorization to return the unit was readily provided; and they sent me a replacement unit within 24 hours of receiving it. About the only complaint was I had to pay the cost of sending it to the factory which wasn't too bad, except the post office raised its fee for insuring the parcel.
In any case, I unreservedly recommend this product.

This unit seemed to have the best standard lake shoreline maps compared to Garmin and Magellan units I've tried. It is great on batteries and meets nearly all our needs. I'd love to be able to upload waypoints, but none of the inexpensive handhelds allow that. For us older folk, the screen could be a lot bigger, but I guess that's what glasses are for. For our marine construction business, it is perfect. Accuracy of all the units is about the same, and operation is unique to the manufacturer you are looking at. Once you learn the screens, you are good to go.

I had been using my Garmin GPS with batteries for years. I used the rechargeable ones, keeping the cost low. I figured I didn't need the additional cords and hassle of the cigarette lighter power adapter. I purchased one on a whim, and I'm really happy with it. I didn't use the backlighting on the GPS at night before, because of how quickly it would drain the batteries. Now I can use it every minute, and I'm really enjoying my GPS even more. I'm glad I own this product.

GARMIN 64 MB GPSMAP? (60CSX WITH BAROMETRIC ALTIMETER & COMPASS) Review

GARMIN 64 MB GPSMAP (60CSX WITH BAROMETRIC ALTIMETER and COMPASS)
Average Reviews:

I took this unit to Galapagos and Amazon forest, it was amazingly fast in South America (10 seconds after power up to get the location; while it takes more than a minute in California to find locations). It kept a useful record of the places we visited along with time and our labels, since there are no detailed maps of the points in the jungle.
Even though I could not find detailed maps for the Amazon forest anywhere, the unit was helpful in tracking my paths and showing how to get back from treks in the dense jungle. It did have all the South American cities and large rivers in its default database, though the Amazon river tends move with the seasons.
Once we got lost in Guayaquil city in Ecuador at night, I just had to turn on the unit to see the direction I had to walk to get back to the hotel.
It is useful even when traveling in a taxi to make sure you are heading approximately towards your destination or not.
Tip: Use Sanyo Eneloop AA batteries, which keep their charge for months, and power the unit for 10s of hours of continuous use.
Tip: To conserve power turn the unit 'on' only once in a while to mark important locations (like your hotel, lodge, and tracking hikes), this way, a single charge may be enough for a week of traveling.
Tip: Back home, download the data to your computer and view the locations/hikes in the map-source software, and right click on it to view the points in Google maps.
Cons: The accompanying software Mapsource is functional but not easy to use.
It is not easy to export/import scanned maps as overlays, since sometimes that is all you have.
I wish it was integrated with google maps and wikimapia.org for exporting/importing maps, paths and notes.
Caveat: I have just used the basic functionality of the unit so far. It has a lot more features like
altitude, speed, sunrise, sunset, compass.

Don't get me wrong, I love this GPS. For me a city boy, this thing is great. However, that being said, there are LOTS of extras you will need, to make this thing work the way you'd like. First off, the base map that comes with it is good only for medium to long trips. So right off the bat if you plan to use it in the metropolitan area and want any kind of detail you need to buy $160 bucks worth of maps, and $100 of extra RAM to hold the maps you download to the unit. Now anyone in their right mind would assume after having paid $180 for the GPS and $160 for the maps and $100 for the extra RAM that you might get a PC to GPS cable right? Wrong. You get to pay another $30 to $60 for the data cable. Want a cigarette adapter? Take out your already shrinking wallet and flop down another $30 to $60. After having shelled out over half a thousand bucks, I still dont have a case. Eh, whats another $20 for a nice leather case. After saying all that I am happy with the product, it is very nice and suits my needs to a tee. I just wish I knew I would have to spend over $560 to get the functionality I thought I was getting for $180.

The GPS 12MAP combines the enhanced software features of the popular GPS III Plus with the rugged design of the GPS 12.Similar to the GPS III Plus, the basemap on the GPS 12MAP will include cartography information for North and South America including a database of cities, interstates, lakes, rivers, railroads, coastlines, and exit information for the federal interstate highway system. Even more remarkable, the GPS 12MAP takes mapping one step further with an added CD-ROM capability. Simply insert one of Garmin's MapSource CD-ROMs into your PC, and download up to 1.44 MB of extra map detail into your GPS 12MAP.The 12 parallel channel GPS 12MAP boasts the same physical characteristics as Garmin's 12CX (excluding color display), including a rugged, waterproof case, dedicated zoom keys for quick map scaling, and a high-resolution LCD display complete with backlighting. Garmin GPSMAP 62St Handheld GPS Navigator Review

UPDATE September 7 2010. The issues resolved below are solved by release 2.50 of the 62st firmware. I have no trouble recommending this unit at this point!
I purchased the 62st recently and took it out for a 9 mile geocaching adventure. While I like the unit very much in general, it has one major problem. Like any hiking GPS, the 62st will record your track as you hike, letting you upload it to your computer when you return home. This is very useful for keeping track of your adventures. The accuracy of the 62st's GPS, combined with its barometric altimeter, lets you accurately record your track for later use.
Sadly what I discovered is that on the 62st simply pressing buttons on the GPS interferes with the barometric altimeter. Pressing even a single button on the GPS can result in spikes in the recorded data of 30 feet or more! On my first test hike, my 62st GPS said that I had climbed more than 8000 vertical feet, while the other GPSes carried by my friends on the same hike recorded only 2000.
I did apples-to-apples comparison experiments of the Garmin 62st, Garmin 60csx and Delorme PN-40, and only the 62st exhibits this bug. Pressing buttons on the other GPSes does not interfere with the recorded track data.
I have been in contact with Garmin Support about this issue, but as of today there is no fix.
Until this issue is resolved sadly I cannot recommend the Garmin 62s or 62st. I hope for a fix soon!
UPDATE as of 8/12/2010: Today Garmin released a new set of beta firmware for the 62 series GPSes. In preliminary experiments, the new firmware seems to have significantly improved things with respect to the altimeter. I will do more testing this weekend, but the situation seems to be improving! I'll report back early next week.
UPDATE as of 8/22/2010. The beta firmware has fixed the altitude issue. Some users have reported problems in updating to the beta, so I'd still suggest holding off on a purchase until Garmin releases a new "official" firmware release. I've taken the GPS out on several hikes totalling over 20 miles, and am quite impressed with it. I upgraded my review to three stars today, and will give it another star once a new firmware release is available.
UPDATE as of 9/7/2010. Garmin has now released firmware 2.50 for the 62st. If you update your unit to the new firmware level, I have no problem recommending it. My earlier problems are fixed.

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx Handheld GPS Navigator Review

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx Handheld GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first reviewer didn't really do his research before he purchased this or else he would know that it only comes with basemaps. The other fact he would know is that that's how all GPS vendors work. They want you to buy their maps separately and only their maps will work on their hardware.
Now, I previously owned a 60CS which I loved after trading in my Vista. With the newly upgraded 60CSx you get a couple of additional functions that make it much better than the 60CS. First, there's the SiRF III chipset. It is by far the best chipset out there right now. It's super sensitive and super fast. You can lock onto satellites even in your house in many cases! No longer will you loose reception in tricky situations. Most of the time you can even keep the 60CSx in your backpack and it will still track your movements.
The other highly requested function for many years is the expansion memory, now in the form of a microSD. Now you can load almost half of the U.S. into 512mb of microSD. Later, larger capacity microSD cards will be released that will allow you to loan the entire US! That's awesome!
Two things that you will loose by going to the 60CSx from the 60CS, the alarm clock, and the passive barometric tracking. Apparently, the new 60CSx no longer has a sleep mode so that these two things will not continue to work if you turn OFF the unit. The 60CS had a sleep mode so that the altimeter would still record your barometric after the unit was turned off and wake up to sound the alarm clock but not with the new 60CSx.
Most people don't use these functions anyway so I don't think you'll miss them. Also, the SiRF III and microSD more than make up for those two shortfalls.
