Garmin City Navigator North America for Detailed Maps of the United State, Canada and Mexico (DVD) Review

Garmin City Navigator North America for Detailed Maps of the United State, Canada and Mexico (DVD)
Average Reviews:

The software is OK, but not great. Other reviews mention its limitations and shortcomings. The main problem is that the unlock process is complex and has draconian restrictions. You don't get an unlock code with the product. Instead you get a certificate with an 8 digit code. Then submit this 8 digit code, in combination with a serial number for a GPS unit, to Garmin in order to obtain a 25 digit unlock key. Finally you enter the 25 digit unlock key. (Got all that?) Since you can't use the maps on a PC unless you also enter the serial number for a portable device, you can't buy this software just for PC use.
Garmin makes good products and I've been a longtime customer. Between work and home I own 7 of their units. But I'm losing my loyalty to them because they're constantly nickel-and-diming us for updates and making us jump through crazy hoops. Avoid this product unless you REALLY need the updated maps (which are not truly up-to-date, as others have mentioned). Instead try finding the old MetroGuide, which was much more user friendly.
Being a software developer myself I can sympathize with Garmin's concern for piracy. But they need to weigh that against the burden they are putting on honest users. I regret buying this product and will start looking at other vendors for my home and business GPS applications.

Magellan GPS 310 1.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Magellan GPS 310 1.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Magellan 310 holds 100 waypoints in memory. Higher priced units hold 500, but since I am not a "world traveler" 100 is fine with me. The unit does not come with an NMEA cable to connect to a PC, but Magellan will send you one free if you pay the 5 dollar shipping charge. The owners manual explains all of the features of the unit in sufficient detail that even I can operate it.
The manual is overly pessimistic in regard to the time the unit takes to "fix" a location. The manual says 2 to 5 minutes for a location fix, but I get a "lock" in 30 to 50 seconds most of the time. Sitting on my sofa, in front of a window, the unit obtained a postion fix in 45 seconds with the venetian blinds only partially open. Venturing into a desert canyon the unit performed even faster. With most of the horizon blocked by the canyon walls the 310 locked in a postion fix in 30 seconds.
The 310 also performed well in a moving car, with the unit propped up on top of the dashboard. In the moving car the 310 maintained a lock on enough satellites to register speed of travel and a working "North" arrow.
It doesn't have the bells, whistles, moving maps, etc. of the higher priced units, but it does what I wanted it to do when I bought it.

Garmin MapSource WorldMap (CD-ROM) Review

Garmin MapSource WorldMap (CD-ROM)

I bought this to use with my Garmin eMap. For the USA the detail level is the same as came preinstalled on the unit--major highways. I've used it in London, Cambridge, Paris, Tokyo and Munich. There isn't really enough detail to find your way around any of these cities but it is useful for e.g. finding your way from suburb to suburb. The River Cam wasn't very close to where the map had it so it helps to use one's eyes. The maps are dated. We are developing a site in the high Andes near San Pedro de Atacama for the ALMA telescope--the map of that region did not show the Jama Road from Calama to Salta Argentina, a major international route (admittedly less than a decade old--but paved!).

Garmin's WorldMap MapSource CD-ROM provides worldwide coverage with basemap-level detail, including political boundaries, cities, towns, major motorwaysand/or interstates, and principal highways; lakes, major streams, and rivers;and urban areas and railroads. WorldMap displays excellent coastline detail thatincludes many offshore islands, as well as worldwide nautical navigation aidssuch as day beacons, radio beacons, RACONs, fog signals, lights, and buoys. Alsoshown are U.S. interstate exit information, such as service stations, gasstations, restaurants, hotels, campsites, hospitals, banks, and more. WorldMapincludes management functions that allow you to transfer waypoints, routes, andtracks between your PC and nearly all Garmin GPS units (excluding the GPS100family and panel mount aviation units) while viewing base map-level maps on yourPC screen.
It is recommended for use with the GPS III Plus, NavTalk, GPS 12MAP, and GPSMAP162/168. It is compatible with StreetPilot GPS, StreetPilot ColorMap, GPSMAP295, and eMap, which require a blank 8 or 16 MB cartridge for loading map data.

I bought this to go with my Garmin E-Trax H that I bought at Amazon. No direcions, but I had it working in about ten minutes. I can download my waypoints very easily. Pharos Traveler GPS 505 Sport GPS Review

Pharos Traveler GPS 505 Sport GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've only owned the 505 for about a week now. It's a great deal when you consider you get a functional GPS with software for all of the US and Canada and Pocket PC all in one unit. The beauty of the Pocket PC over a normal GPS is that you have great flexibility in the GPS software you use with it - and thus a competitive market - in addition to having all of the other advantages of a Pocket PC (MP3 player, multimedia, Outlook, Word, etc).
The 505 came packed with some nice extras: a flexible, suction cup car holder, a car charger, a 120v power supply and a mini USB cord. It uses the mini USB access port for both charging and information transfer(you can set an option on the Pocket PC to charge the unit directly from the computer).
The unit itself seems to be very well built and has a removable battery. Battery life seems good so far. The only PPC I've owned in the past was a source of frustration for me in that everytime it was reset or the battery ran out it would lose all of its memory. This unit appears to have internal flash RAM as well as flash ROM so it retains its memory even when its reset although it does lose its connection with whatever it was pulling from the SD card (the battery has yet to run out on me so I can't vouch for that). I've seen some reports that the unit is waterproof but I don't see how that could be considering all of the potential places water could get in. The screen is nice sized and can be viewed in either landscape or portrait with the push of a button. The GPS (based on the much vaunted Sirfstar III chip) consistently picks up the signal quickly and even indoors depending on where you're at (maybe not so much in the basement).
The software: Ostia 7.5. I've read a lot of complaints about the Ostia software and was wondering if I'd have to replace it on buying the unit. One should draw a distinction between problems with the software and the data. So far the software has been pretty flawless (it hasn't frozen up much at all but don't forget that you're also dealing with Windows Mobile) and the data has been spot-on. The software has a lot of options for adjustments (two different 3D views and one overhead view, zoom in and out, etc). I think the data may be dependent on where its collected. So far I've used it in the Seattle and Vancouver BC areas and found it to be very accurate (the Point of Interest data in BC was much more limited than in Seattle). A couple of suggestions I would have for the software: a record of distance traveled and an address search capability that could be begun from a user selected portion of the address. Example: I had 3 different map segments open that covered ground from Olympia, WA to Southern BC (an area of approximately 30,000 square miles and 7-9 million people) and was only able to search for an address using this format: house #, street, city. My search for "7th Ave" timed out the system because there were so many 7th Avenues in so many towns to contemplate. When I closed all but one of the 3 mapsand conducted the search I was able to find my target almost instantly. Had I been able to search by city first I could have left all of my maps open.
All in all, it seems to have been a very good choice. I'll let you know if my initial impressions are confirmed later on.

I purchased a Cobra GPS 500 unit to upgrade from my base model Garmin Etrex. I had thought the 18 channels and FAST circuitry would make it operate better then my Etrex. I was sadly disappointed. The Cobra will not hold satellite lock in any kind of cover at all. I am an experienced GPS user and outdoorsman who does a lot of hunting, and I can tell you without any doubt that the Cobra GPS 500 is totally useless for use in the woods. The Cobra GPS 500 loses satellite lock in areas where my Garmin Etrex held it easily. (This situation appears to be common to the entire Cobra GPS line because I have a friend who purchased a GPS 100 and he complains about the same thing.) To top things off, I contacted Cobra Customer Service about these problems and they wouldn't even respond to my email. So what you have here is a truely terrible product backed by terrible customer service. I would recommend that any potential buyers of this product avoid it at all cost, and spend their money on a Garmin or Magellan unit instead.

Lowrance iFinder Go2 Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

Lowrance iFinder Go2 Waterproof Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a newbie to GPS and there is definitely a learning curve. The Lowrance manual that comes with the unit is excellent to getting you started quickly, but you absolutely must get the advanced manual, available on-line at lowrance.com, to really enjoy the features. It does take some study and practice, but it is worth the effort, it is not that bad and the unit is (to me) impressive. It does not have street-by-street navigation, and it doesn't talk to me, but units that do cost $hundreds more. When I am in my car, it is quite usable; otherwise, street-by-street navigation is unnecessary anyway. I have recommended this unit to family, and feature-for-feature, I thought it was the best value of all the units I found in its price range. It quickly locates the satellites, often faster than the documentation would suggest, and I have found it remarkable that it has maintained the signals in very improbable situations. It is much more sensitive and reliable than I expected after reading another review that complained about signal acquisition and maintenance; I have no comlaints whatsoever about that.
I do admit that when I get the extra available $$ I may get a color street-by-street unit that talks to me; it would be safer in an urban environment while driving, but I really don't need it. I would also like a slightly larger screen for when I don't have my glasses.
A couple of words about service. It is a truism that modern solid-state electronics either fails very quickly or lasts a long long time. I had a defective unit and it failed during the first couple of weeks. (This also underscores the importance of putting it to a lot of use, testing out its features etc., to give it a good burn-in). Call to service was easy, the technicians clearly knowledgeable and when it was discovered that the problem couldn't be handled over the phone authorization to return the unit was readily provided; and they sent me a replacement unit within 24 hours of receiving it. About the only complaint was I had to pay the cost of sending it to the factory which wasn't too bad, except the post office raised its fee for insuring the parcel.
In any case, I unreservedly recommend this product.

Garmin eTrex Legend Cx Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

Finally, the perfect handheld GPS. The addition of microSD cards to the eTrex line has made the ultra portable unit the perfect companion to carry with you on all your adventures - land, sea, or trail. Although the unit comes with a 64mb card, I purchased two 1gb cards. When you own a Garmin Mapsource product, you are allowed to use it on up to two units. I already own Recreational Lakes and Fishing Hotspots, as well as CitySelect which came with my Garmin GPS V Deluxe which I still use all the time locally in my Jeep and on one boat because of the mounting ability and NMEA output. The GPS V, however, is limited to 19mb and is now utilized in the regions I most frequent. Unlocking CitySelect for the eTrex Legend Cx was simple at the Garmin website. I would recommend first updating the software in the unit to the latest version, which is now just a few keystrokes with Garmin's Webupdater software downloaded from their site to handle the large capacity cards. On one card, I have Recreational Lakes East and CitySelect for the entire Northeast and MidAtlantic regions. On the other card I have the remainder of the US and Canada. The cards are smaller than the fingernail of your little finger. The eTrex Legend allows you to enable all or whichever Mapsource products you want. When not using it on the road, I disable the CitySelect to take full advantage of the Recreational Lakes software. If you do not own a mapsource product already, then purchase CityNavigator which I believe Garmin has updated the most for the points of interest and new roadways.
For my needs, the Legend series is ideal. If you climb mountains, ski in the wilderness, or are involved in search and rescue then the Vista series would be better because of the more accurate altimeter and compass.
I really like how easy the screen can be read in bright sunlight. The battery life has exceded my expectations, but always carry some spares and you should purchase a 12V adapter for use when a socket is available, especially if you want to turn up the screen brightness.
If all you want is a car navigator, then this is not the ideal unit. It is pretty much a handheld, although after some fiddling around I found the best way to mount it in a vehicle is with velcro. There is an available windshield bracket. The 60Cx and 76Cx may have better acquisition in canyons or under canopy in rainforests, but the smaller size of the eTrex series will allow you to carry it with you virtually everywhere.
The more I use it, the more I love it. Hope this was helpful.

With the Legend Cx, Garmin has updated a much-loved device with expandable memory on a microSD card so you can load optional map data for your hiking, hunting, and other outdoor excursions. Add to that a bright, full-color TFT display, automatic routing, and long, 36-hour battery life, and you've got a great companion for your next outdoor or boating adventure.
You can use the Legend Cx's memory card slot with preprogrammed microSD cards from Garmin (sold separately) that provide topographic maps, city streets, and nautical charts. In fact, the unit is compatible with most Garmin MapSource products, including BlueChart, City Navigator, U.S. Topo 24K, and U.S. Topo and Recreational Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots. The unit comes preloaded with an Americas autoroute basemap that provides automatic routing capabilities, including highways, exits, and tide data. You can even get turn-by-turn directions when you're driving, and an integrated trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, and more.
As on all eTrex units, the primary controls are located on the side of the unit, so you can operate it with one hand. An innovative rocker switch on its face makes inputting data easy, and with it you can scroll through menus or pan the map page. Fast USB connectivity makes loading charts and maps quick and easy, while navigation instructions can be shared with repeaters, plotters, and autopilots using NMEA protocols through the dedicated serial port. Additionally, the case is water resistant to IEC 60529 IPX7 standards (can be submerged in one meter of water for 30 minutes).
Another key feature of the Legend Cx is the 10,000-point automatic track log; 20 saved tracks (500 points each) let you retrace your path in both directions. There's also a large-numbers option for easy viewing, as well as a dual-position display mode. Lastly, the unit includes built-in celestial tables for best times to fish and hunt, plus sun and moon calculations.
If you like the features of the Legend Cx but require an electronic compass and a barometric altimeter, check out the Garmin eTrex Vista Cx.

Garmin eTrex Legend C Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

Garmin eTrex Legend C Waterproof Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Two months ago my family and I joined about 2.3 million others in leaving the Texas Gulf Coast as Hurricane Rita came our way. The road system could not handle that much traffic and a 3 hour drive turned into a 16 hour nightmare. Roads were clogged beyond capacity and I used a county map to navigate along back roads (gravel, shell, dirt and cowpath) to get ahead of a few thousand cars stopped on highways. That worked fine until the map ran out. Then we were stuck in traffic and melting heat. As we sat there I saw other people using nearby roads with confidence and I assumed they had better maps than I did. I was right, but their maps were on their GPS devices. The decision to buy a GPS was made then and there.
I did a lot of research trying to decide which device I wanted to buy and soon found myself lost in a sea of varying opinions. Right after reading a review that extolled the virtues of one unit I would read another that completely trashed it. Eventually I decided that the reviews here and at other sites were not going to give me the answer I was looking for and I would have to buy a device and try it for myself. Using reviews and some common sense I decided that the Garmin eTrex Legend C was a good bet for a trial and ordered it from Amazon.
After giving it a real workout this last week I have to report that this device is a dream. When I chose the Legend C it was my intention that be our introduction into GPS navigation on road and off as well as to use for Geocaching.
We began using it the day we got it by entering an address and navigating to a friend's house on the other side of town. What amazed me was that it chose the same route I would have used, (from among several that were not as desireable). A few days later we used it on a 300 mile trip and it performed flawlessly. It even found our destination, a place in the middle of nowhere, past the end of the last marked road and in a pasture accessible only by a ranch road with no name (that was on the map I downloaded into the device from Garmin City Select Map CD). We used it in the field for several days and my son played with it almost constantly. Before we left to return home we used it to find our first geocache.
The Pros - Great battery life. I do recommend the 12 volt car power cable option because the backlight times out to conserve battery life. We used it for a week (kids sat there and played with it for hours trying to discover all of the features) and it's still on the first set of batteries.
- Easy to read display. Like most other color displays it washes out a little when direct sun is shining on it, but unlike the color display on my cellular telephone it only takes a small adjustment in angle to see the readout well. The display is sharp and automatically changes at dusk and dawn to make itself easier to view in different light conditions.
- Amazingly accurate. When navigating, the device provides warning of upcoming turns by beeping and changing the display. As you get closer to the turn it displays a countdown to the number of seconds before the turn. We were astounded by how accurately it marked the turns to the second.
- Quality of optional maps from the City Select CD. We were out in rough country where even the marked county roads are unpaved and barely maintained. The number of no-name ranch roads scraped out by graders, or are trails marked only by the track of other vehicles that use it, are how people get around once off the highway. Other than some of the smaller tracks this map found every gravel or shell private road we came across. We even found some roads that we had not known existed before as we saw them on the map display while driving around.
Ability to maintain contact with satellites. If you plan to use this in the car I recommend that you turn it on outside the car first and let it find the satellites. It seems to work faster that way. However, while it may take longer for the Legend to find the satellites from inside a vehicle, no matter how it finds them once it acquires the satellite signals it hangs on to them from inside the car. The only way we ever got it to completely lose the signals was to hold it down well below the line of sight from any window. I purchased the optional vehicle mount that suction cups to the windshield and I always had a great signal. Outside, under medium cover, it held signals without a problem. I did not have major cover to deal with so I can't say what would happen in a forest. I expect that the Legend would have the same problems as any GPS would when used under a heavy canopy of trees.
Cons - The device uses a small pointer button to maneuver through options on many of the menus. When trying to manipulate the pointer and then press it to enter an option, it is easy to make mistakes and make the cursor move when you meant to press "enter". A minor hassle but one you should be aware of.
The display is small for use as in vehicles. I could read it allright, but if I were using the device only for in car navigation I would a larger readout. But, as I said I chose this unit to perform a variety of GPS jobs.
Pro and Con - The maps from the CD were fantastic. I have yet to find an error. The "unlocking" process was not as much a pain as I expected from reading other reviews, but it was not as user friendly as I would like.
Maps are loaded by sections and urban areas really eat up a lot of memory. My next unit will have more memory or an expansion slot to add memory via SD or CF cards.
Final analysis. If you are looking for a GPS device to perform a wide variety of tasks on and off road then I highly recommend the eTrex Legend C. As an entry level unit it is expensive, but the cheaper devices had limitations that I was not prepared to live with. More expensive units offer more memory and other things that are nice to have, and of course you can find devices that are more specifically designed and useful for more narrowly focused applications.

Lowrance iFinder Go2 Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

This unit seemed to have the best standard lake shoreline maps compared to Garmin and Magellan units I've tried. It is great on batteries and meets nearly all our needs. I'd love to be able to upload waypoints, but none of the inexpensive handhelds allow that. For us older folk, the screen could be a lot bigger, but I guess that's what glasses are for. For our marine construction business, it is perfect. Accuracy of all the units is about the same, and operation is unique to the manufacturer you are looking at. Once you learn the screens, you are good to go.

Garmin eTrex Vista Cx Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

Garmin eTrex Vista Cx Waterproof Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this GPS.
Previously, I had a Magellan handheld GPS (with dim black and white display). It worked well for about 5 years... getting me from point A to point B while I drove my family around California to visit relatives. Recently, I decided that I wanted more so I bought an eTrex Vista CX.
Important features of this GPS are:
(1) it uses a Micro SD card. This allows for storage of A LOT of maps on the GPS. Buy a larger Micro SD card at Frys or eBay and you will be a happy camper. 128 or 256 megs will do the job. We recently took an Alaskan cruise, and I was able to upload all of California, Oregon, Washington, BC Canada, and Youkon onto the GPS with some room to spare. Having the ability to use a mini-SD card is very valuable if you are a traveler like me.
(2) Turn by turn directions **IF** you buy the correct software to go with it. I bought the MapSource® City Navigator North America DVD to get this feature. The key is to make sure that the map that you buy comes with "fully routable detailed maps" as Garmin likes to say. When you "upload" to the GPS, upload both maps and route info and you are set. By the way, don't bother trying to steal (ie BitTorrent) the maps from the internet. It won't work since maps are sold by Garmin and MATCHED TO THE SERIAL NUMBER OF EACH GPS. Just save some time, and buy the DVD online.
For those that don't know, most GPS come with a "base map" that just has the basics (highways, points of interest). If you want every street and turn by turn directions, then you need to buy a map CD or DVD from the manufacturer. An exception to this are the Magellan Roadmates (and others) which come with a built in hard drive that has maps included. Read the box carefully for whatever you decide to buy.
(3) Legend vs. Vista and C vs. CX. Garmin makes models that are somewhat similar, and somewhat confusing. Here's a quick way to tell them apart. VISTA is the same as the LEGEND, but with an electronic compass and a barometric altimeter. An Electronic compass allows the compass to work well when you ARE NOT moving. This is important for when you are on foot and want to stop and get a good compass reading. The barometric altimeter uses pressure difference to check your altitude. The "C" in all Garmin GPS systems stands for color, "CX" means it is both color AND allows for a Micro SD card beyond the built in memory. This allows you to get more memory in the future as you need it, as maps become more detailed, and as micro SD card prices drop.
Various random thoughts:
(1) This GPS does a great job in the car. It does *NOT* give you the sort of "turn left here" verbal directions. If you need that, get a Magellan Roadmate (or TomTom, etc.) that will speak to you. The Garmin beeps at you in advance of a turn, and beeps again the moment when you should be making the turn. It also changes the display to show you a closeup diagram of what you should do next. It also has a screen which give you turn by turn TEXT instructions (turn left 0.5 miles onto highway 5, etc) very similar to what you get with Google Map driving directions.
(2) The map has a good sized display, assuming you DON'T have vision issues. Mounting the GPS on the windshield helps make it easy to see. The Magellan Roadmates have bigger displays and are designed for road use without looking at the GPS as much. Garmins like this one are "multiuse" designed to do a decent job in the car AND as a handheld for camping and backpacking while on foot. It also works great in a boat, and I've used it on cruise ships, ferries, etc.
(3) This GPS works great as a handheld. If you are on vacation, you can use it in the car AND then get out and walk with it (try that with a not as pocket sized Magellan Roadmate). The eTrex Vista easily fits in a pants pocket or around the neck on an lanyard, a Roadmate might fit in a pocket, but it'd have to be a bigger jacket pocket. Often, people mistake it for a digital camera around my neck.
(4) Battery life is awesome (using rechargable AAs) *IF* you have the backlight off. I would suggest using the backlight only when you have the GPS hooked to car or computer power. The TFT display looks good outside anyway without backlight. So use sunlight when walking.
(5) The user interface is much better than the current Magellan handhelds. It is more logical, and there are many more settings for the geek in us all. Unlike the Roadmate, it doesn't have a touch screen. A small "joystick" and four buttons are used for all actions.
(6) The eTrex Vista CX connects to a computer using a standard usb to mini-usb cable. Transfer speeds are good, and much better than my old serial cable Magellan. Uploading and downloading to/from the GPS is straightforward and logical.
(7) More car info. The car power cable, coupled with the suction windshield mount works great. The backlight is very important while driving (day or night really), so get the car power cord. I have used this GPS 20 or more times with various rental cars. I just attach the suction mount to the car windshield, attach the GPS and power cord, and I'm off and driving. Before a trip, I use the Garmin Mapsource (Garmin Bobcat for Mac) software to set up "waypoints" for the trip. Once on the ground, I just tell the GPS to create a turn by turn driving directions and calculate a route to any waypoint I want. Works like a charm.
(8) COST: For this GPS, I bought the GPS itself, then a car power cable, then the Mapsource DVD, then a bigger mini-SD card, and finally, a suction mount for the car windshield. The GPS was about $300 (2005). The DVD was about $100. The rest, about $50. So I'm about $450 into this GPS. As of June 2008, I've used it for about 3.5 years with no problems. It's still in perfect condition and still going strong. Just added a 2GB Micro SD card to the GPS. Now it holds the ENTIRE North America Map set!
Bottom line:
If you only want to use a GPS in your car, with audible turn by turn directions and a touch screen... get a Roadmate or TomTom or Garmin NuVi. If you want a smaller rugged "pocket sized" multi-use GPS (car, camping, backpacking, walking, boating) this great one and you will be very happy.
UPDATE 2010: Have moved over to a Garmin Nuvi 765T for use in the car. Still have the Etrex Vista as a backup and for use on foot. Still going strong.

With the Vista Cx, Garmin has updated a much-loved device withexpandable memory on microSD card so you can load optional map data for your hiking, hunting and other outdoor excursions. Add to that a bright, full-color TFT display, automatic routing, and long, 20-hour battery life, and you've got a great companion for your next outdoor or boating adventure. Plus, the Vista CX adds a barometric altimeter and an electronic compass.
You can use the Vista Cx's memory card slot with preprogrammed microSD cards from Garmin (sold separately) that provide topographic maps, city streets, and nautical charts. In fact, the unit is compatible with most Garmin MapSource products including BlueChart, City Navigator, U.S. Topo 24K, and U.S. Topo and Recreational Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots. Garmin eTrex Venture Cx Waterproof Hiking GPS (Yellow) Review

Garmin eTrex Venture Cx Waterproof Hiking GPS (Yellow)

(More customer reviews)
I drove my wife crazy spending several weeks worth of nights researching which GPS to buy for my upcoming elk hunting trip in Colorado. After reading several reviews on Amazon about Magellan and Garmin, I decided to focus on Garmin, especially after my old Magellan stopped locking on.
The price of the Venture Cx immediately jumped out at me. As did one of the Amazon reviews about buying the Venture instead of the Legend Cx. So I started comparing features of the various units on Garmin's website. Should I go with the Legend or Vista or Venture, or spend another $200+ on a top of the line GPSMap 60CSx? I soon realized the Venture Cx had ALL of the features of the 60CSx except an altimter, compass and the new top of the line SIRF II chipset/receiver. So I figured I would buy the Venture Cx and try it out hunting in the dark timber and deep canyons of the West Elk Wilderness, and if I kept losing the signal I would return it and upgrade to the expensive 60CSx.
Well, needless to say, I am back from my week long hunt and was blown away that the unit never lost a signal in the deepest of dark timber, and I mean deep! Sometimes it would jump around a bit as you walked, but it always corrected itself in a second or two and never lost the signal. Before I left I bought a 512MB micro SD card for $15, the US Topo for $75 from Amazon, loaded the maps for the area I would be hunting, and I always knew where I was and even what road I was quading on. My other friends all had GPS's but not the mapping kind. They were also blown away by the mapping accuracy and how quickly the unit would start up and acquire a position, even in the dark forest. I kept the unit on most of the time as I hunted so it would leave my track in case I wanted to back track, and I still have 2 of 3 bars on my rechargeable NiHM batteries after 7 days.
So, bottom line, if you want an incredibly feature rich, mapping GPS, don't waste your money on the more expensive Legend or Vista Cx, nor the top of the line GPS Map60 CSx. Go with the bright easy to find yellow Venture Cx, buy your own USB cable (or use the one that came with your digital camera like I did) and buy a higher capacity Micro SD card (the Legend Cx only comes with 64MB), buy the US Topo from Amazon and you are rockin and rollin for geocaching, hunting/hiking in deep dark timber, and turn by turn navigating around your home city and the USA.

With the eTrex Venture Cx, Garmin offers all the basic features of the much-loved Legend Cx, without all the bells and whistles. You get the same great hardware and software with the Venture Cx as is found on the Legend Cx, but Garmin has removed the included MicroSD card, the USB cable, Trip and Waypoint software, and the bike clip. The result is an even more affordable little unit that keeps things simple -- perfect for the first-time GPS user or someone who doesn't want to fuss with a lot of extras. The Venture Cx is designed to go right out of the box, so there's no messing with computers or CD-ROMs.
Don't be deceived, though, the Venture Cx has got power and features where it counts. You get a bright, full-color TFT display and a long, 32-hour battery life (using two AA batteries). All of this makes the Venture Cx a great companion for your next outdoor or boating adventure.
You can also use the Venture Cx's memory card slot with preprogrammed microSD cards from Garmin (sold separately) that provide topographic maps, city streets, and nautical charts. An integrated trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed and more.

An innovative rocker switch on its face makes inputting data easy, and with it you can scroll through menus or pan the map page. If at some point you want to integrate your computer with the Venture Cx, you can purchase a USB cable, which makes loading charts and maps to an optional MicroSD memory card quick and easy. Plus, navigation instructions can be shared with repeaters, plotters, and autopilots using NMEA protocols through the dedicated serial port. Additionally, the case is water-resistant to IEC 60529 IPX7 standards (can be submerged in one meter of water for 30 minutes).

Garmin eTrex Vista Handheld GPS Navigator Review

Garmin eTrex Vista Handheld GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Meridian Platinum and the Garmin Vista to do a technical comparison. They are both great units with similar price and features. I also tested the next level down: Meridian Gold and the Garmin Legend with similar results. Here's my take:
If small size and high resolution are important to you, buy the Garmin.
If you prefer a larger screen, larger buttons, a floating unit, or something that can be viewed beyond an armslength away, get the Magellan. If you require reading glasses, avoid the Garmin.
Here is a list of specific comments:
- Size: Garmin fits easily in a shirt pocket. Magellan is 114% larger by volume and is better suited for a fanny pack or large coat pocket.
- Weight: Magellan is 51% heavier.
- Display: Magellan display is 66% larger, viewable beyond an arm's length. Garmin not viewable beyond an arm's length.
- Pixels: Garmin has over twice as many pixels.
- Resolution: With the smaller display and higher pixel count, the Garmin screen resolution is about four times greater.
- Both are waterproof. Magellan floats...Garmin doesn't.
- Reception: Magellan had slightly better reception, probably due to larger internal antenna.
- Screen protection: Magellan has a raised frame around display to help prevent scratches, but it also collects lots of dust on the screen as a result.
- Maps/waypoints: Low resolution for the Magellan made small map features difficult to discern. Garmin much easier to read with a large variety of highly detailed map symbols/icons.
- Features: Similar for both, but the Magellan had a few extras I liked: audible alerts for turns, a "windshield" navigation view with waypoints drawn in the "distance", a "speedometer" view with dial, sun and moon location displayed on the compass dial.
- Buttons/knobs: Garmin's buttons are all on the sides and are very small. You won't be able to operate them with gloves. I like the little joystick for the left thumb very much, but folks with clumsy hands will not. Magellan's buttons are large, easy, and labelled.
- Magnetic compass: Garmin must be held flat for this feature. Magellan's compass works in any position. (With motion, separate heading indicator works at any orientation on both units.)
- Battery life and accuracy: About the same for both.
- PC cable/DC car adapter: Garmin slides onto the back. Magellan has an awkward screw-in device.
- Mapping Memory: Garmin has 24 MB ready for upload from mapping software (sold separately). Magellan requires additional memory card...
- Owner's Manual: Garmin provides complete owner's manual. Magellan only provides a quick-start manual. Complete manual is electronic and divided into two files.
- User interface: I found the Garmin software and menus to be slightly more intuitive.
Result: I wanted a small unit for outdoor activities and occasional automobile travel. I like small, high-precision devices with lots of detail. I kept the Garmin.
I also ordered the car dash mount, DC auto adapter, belt carry case, and MapSource MetroGuide USA CD. I have been very pleased with each of them.

Magellan eXplorist 210 Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

Magellan eXplorist 210 Waterproof Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have not had this device long, but we did spend a day geocaching with it. It performs very well.
I chose this model because I wanted a GPS unit that I could access with my PC through USB and this seems to work very well. Included is a small application that will convert .loc waypoint location files to the .gs files that this unit uses.
When I plug the USB cable into the unit and then into my USB hub and power up the GPS unit, it appears as drive H:/ and I can move/rename/copy/etc. the files in the GPS unit without having to use the GPS interface, which is a time saver.
It has a nice readable map that can be zoomed out to see the whole planet, or zoomed in to a 100ft scale. It recognizes primary roads and highways in my town and knows the name of the lake I live near. Apparently I can also purchase and download custom maps from mapsend, but I haven't tried that yet.
Without even reading the manual, just by fiddling with the gizmo, we were able to figure out how to find our geocache destinations, set a route, add waypoints, and choose custom icons for the waypoints from a selection of maybe 20 or 30.
I can't comment on battery life because I haven't worn out a set of batteries yet, but I think other people have commented on that.
This unit is accurate enough that it can tell when I *turn around in place and face a different direction* which is pretty amazing to me. I am very pleased with the performance.
I did take one star off because already the clear plastic over the display has gotten scratched. BE WARNED: the display is VERY EASY to scratch. I'm going to have to find a little leather case or cloth bag or something for it. As a comparison, I have carried my nokia cellphone around in my pocket with my car keys for about three years and there is no significant scratching on the display, but with this GPS unit, whatever plastic they chose, it got scratched up quite a bit with just a few hours in my pocket (with carkeys). I realize that wasn't too bright of me, but I know there are more durable plastics out there because of my experience with my nokia, so... just be careful! Now the screen looks like its got dust on it that can't be wiped off... :-(
Other than that, I am very pleased and feel that this unit is a good value.

Lowepro 3.5-Inch Navi Handheld GPS Carrying Case (Black) Review

Lowepro 3.5-Inch Navi Handheld GPS Carrying Case (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This carabiner clip case is styled after the chalk bags rock climbers use and is marketed towards outdoorsy types and people on the go who may not always have both hands free. The vertically-oriented chalk bag hangs off your belt loop or other strap and the drawstring opening allows you quick, one-handed access to your device. Instead of fumbling with a zipper, you can just reach down, stick your hand through the elastic opening and pull out your unit. I prefer carabiner-style bags over other kinds of bags (like shoulder straps) because of the convenience and outdoorsy feeling I get wearing them, almost like a side arm. I don't have to fish through my pockets or backpack when I need the device.
Soft and cushiony, the neoprene bag protects your device against scratches, accidental drops, and other mishaps. One potential flaw, however, is with the way the carabiner is attached. The clip itself is metal and very strong, but where it meets the bag, it is not sufficiently ruggedized. Instead of a riveted eyelet or a thick strap of ballistic cloth with reinforced stitching, it is a thin piece of nylon material sewn into the neoprene skin (see my photos in the gallery). It does not look like it can take much punishment. An accidental yank or a snag against an object (like a door handle or hook) might cause the stitching to rip. This is only really of concern in outdoor environments where trees and branches might be sticking out, but since this bag is marketed towards such users, I am flagging it as a consideration.
Also, as mentioned by other reviewers, the spare battery compartment is too tight. It fits 2 AAA batteries perfectly, end to end, but not 2 AA batteries. They have to be crammed in there and forced closed.
Overall, an attractive bag that is convenient if you like the chalk bag design. It also fits iPods, digital cameras, and other mp3 players. If you prefer a zippered, non-carabiner version, Lowepro has the Lowepro 4.3-Inch Navi Sleeve GPS Carrying Case (Black).
