Delorme Street Atlas USA 2008 Review

Delorme Street Atlas USA 2008
Average Reviews:

I moved near the Hilton Head Island Sun City and ordered Street Atlas 2008 to update my five year old 2003 edition. Sun City and the surrounding town have doubled in size in the last five years, but Street Atlas has not added a single new street to the area in that time. Also, mislabeled roads have not been corrected.
I returned it to Delorme.

Pharos NAV02 Pocket PC Navigator Software Review

Pharos NAV02 Pocket PC Navigator Software
Average Reviews:

I purchased this to be used with my PDA/Phone. I wanted the convenience of only carrying one unit. This serves that purpose. However, it does not have several features you will get in a regular GPS unit. The address gets you to the street, not the driveway like my old Garmin unit. You cannot add waypoints.
For the convenience, it works pretty good.

Garmin MapSource LakeMaster Wisconsin Freshwater Maps microSD Card Review

Garmin MapSource LakeMaster Wisconsin Freshwater Maps microSD Card

To date, I have only used the product in a Nuvi gps, while driving on a lake for ice fishing. It opens a whole new window on the world- to see the underwater depth contours (and any waypoints I had added) while driving on the lake, is really helpful in finding fishing locations. I'm looking forward to using it during the summer. Well worth the price for me.

Garmin MapSource U.S.A. Topographical Map CD-ROM (Windows)

I bought this product for hikes and to guide me in navigating rivers. Only very major roads are named so I can't use this very easily to calculate my route there. Most roads are there but they just vanish at some points and reappear in others. Using a real topo map it is immediately obvious that these same roads do not dissapear and in fact continue on their course uninteruppted like a road should. The elevations and detail are very course. No trails are shown. I am not very happy I bought this product and am going to look into the roads and recreation to see if it does a better job. FYI I bought this to use with my Etrex Legend which I think is just great.

Garmin's United States TOPO MapSource CD-ROM is similar to U.S. Geological Survey 1:100,000-scale topographic paper maps. It includes trip and waypoint management functions that allow you to transfer waypoints, routes, and tracks between your PC and nearly all Garmin GPS units (excluding the GPS 100 family and panel-mount aviation units). With MapSource, you can view highways, roads, hiking trails, snowmobile trails, backwoods trails, elevation contours, point and summit elevations, some bathymetric contours, geographic names, churches, and schools. Shoreline detail is included for lakes, reservoirs, small bodies of water, waterways, rivers, and streams. Icons represent boat ramps, dams, marinas, campgrounds, public facilities, mile markers, first aid stations, picnic sites, swimming areas, ski areas, wrecks, fuel locations, and dangerous and restricted areas.
In addition, nautical navigational aids for the 50 states are provided, including radio beacons, RACONs, and fog signals; river, harbor, and other lights; and day beacons and lighted and unlighted buoys. Shipwrecks, submerged rocks, obstructions, and other hazards to nautical navigation are also displayed.
Note on compatibility: The trip and waypoint management functions of this product work with nearly all Garmin GPS units, excluding the GPS 100 family and panel-mount aviation units. Specifically, the map-download features of this product work with the eTrex Legend, eTrex Vista, eMap, GPS V, StreetPilot, StreetPilot ColorMap, StreetPilot III, and GPSMAP 76, 162, 168, 176, and 295. Some units may require a Garmin data card to upload map data.

Garmin cf Que 1620 North America (010-00290-00) Review

Garmin cf Que 1620 North America (010-00290-00)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using the cf Que 1620 in my HP iPAQ for over 4 months now and am very satisfied with it's performance. Unlike the previous reviewer, I have not had major issues with the GPS unit locating satellites. I have used it in many areas of the US and Canada.
For the initial setup, it is very important that the correct Base Map for the area that you are physically located in is installed, otherwise, the GPS cannot coordinate with the satelite with the mapping software properly. Normally you would choose the North American base maps. The unit shipped from Amazon only includes the North American City Select maps which are needed to get local roads, landmarks, and Points of Interest. Maps for other areas of the world are available from Garmin. In addition, the documentation is fairly complete and will explain how to get the GPS to find the satellite quicker under "Initializing the GPS Receiver" in the Applications Guide.
If you purchase the unit and it comes with the version 5.0 of the City Select maps, contact Garmin and they can get you upgraded to the current version. This happened to me and since I had purchased the unit just before the upgrade occurred, they upgraded me for free. I thought this showed excellent customer service. The upgraded maps had all of the exit number changes that have occurred in my area as well as new street names for new housing developments.
Some basics: Your Pocket PC based PDA will need to have an empty CompactFlash (CF) slot for the GPS antenna that comes with the unit (it also has 64 MB of memory space in the same assembly). Since my iPAQ had a Secure Digital slot (like many PDAs) but no CF slot, I had to purchase a CF sleeve for the iPAQ as well. I'm tempted to buy a iPAQ 2215 since it has both slots in the case (no need for the sleeve).
A couple of specifics: It is a very good idea to make sure you are running MS Pocket PC 2003 operating system. My iPAQ originally came with Pocket PC 2002 and the Garmin had many problems locking up along with very slow performance. Once I upgraded, the difference was tremendous. The Garmin CF Que 1620 is now very stable and fast. The bigger the memory card, the more maps you can store. For example, a 512 MB SD card is able to hold the Northeast & Mid Atlantic U.S. from Virginia up to Maine, the Dallas - Ft. Worth area, Southern California, Idaho, and Utah (with some room to spare).
The Negatives:
- Having to add the CF sleeve made the unit thicker than normal. As a result, the supplied dash mount does not hold the unit as securely as it normally would (it still is adequate though)
- The speaking volume for directions is too low if you have a noisy interior (or if you play your music loud). I found two solutions for this. 1) I bought a set of portable powered speakers and connected them through the headphone jack. 2) Bought one of the Belkin Tunecast II Mobile transmitters to broadcast the directions through the radio (which I take on trips with a rental car - nice and small).
The Positives:
- Excellent customer support. As I mentioned above.
- The unit responds very quickly when a re-route is required (especially with all of the construction that is going on seemingly wherever I'm going...) It always gets me back on-course. Its great to get around traffic jams too.
- Lots of flexibility in choosing how the maps will be displayed while driving. For example, the default is for the unit to zoom the map back and forth depending on your location while I prefer to see more detail of the side streets along the path that the car is taking. Uncheck the Auto-zoom box if you don't want the zooming.
- I tested it head-to-head against the Hertz NeverLost GPS system. It was as good and at times much better during my test in Southern California. The Garmin user interface was much easier to use.
- Lots of POIs (Points of Interest). I'm on the road alot and I really appreciate how it can find my hotel, nearby restaurants, fast food, golf courses, airports, gas stations, etc. quickly and accurately.
- The unit also comes with a matching version of the software that loads on your PC. It is very convenient to create the Waypoints (which I can use as Origin or Destination points) on the PC, then have it download into the cf Que. From there, you just select the Waypoint and tell the Garmin to Route to It. It gives you the estimated time of arrival along with the mileage. You can also configure your iPAQ to show Turn-by-Turn instructions with a touch of a button.
Overall, it is an excellent unit. Now that I've used it for a bit of time (everything "high-tech" has a learning curve), I'm more impressed with it every time I use it. Even my techno friends are impressed. Well worth the money. As usual, Amazon got it to me quickly as well.

Garmin TOPO Topographical Maps (Canada) Review

Garmin TOPO Topographical Maps (Canada)

The topo maps are fine on this product, but for hiking I wouldn't bother - there are no trails. I searched around Jasper National Park and Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, and couldn't find *any* trails in this map set at any level of zoom or detail. If you're used to the US Topo maps by Garmin, you'll be disappointed. The disks I received from Amazon said "Version 2.0", which were ordered in August, 2007.

DeLorme Map Library Subscription Card for Topo USA 8.0 and Earthmate PN Series GPS Navigators Review

DeLorme Map Library Subscription Card for Topo USA 8.0 and Earthmate PN Series GPS Navigators
Average Reviews:

I ordered the Map Library along with my PN-40 unit. This map library was one of the deal-makers that led to my buying the DeLorme GPSr. I mainly use the aerial images and the 1:24k topo quads. The color images for my area look to have been taken a couple of years ago, while the b&w's look about 6-7 years old. This will vary by geographic area. You can layer the maps in any order, and view hybrids with the Topo 7 data over the aerial (or whichever view you choose).
This annual subscription is just an unbelievable deal. The downloads I've made already would cost hundreds (going on thousands) of dollars if I bought the maps individually.

Garmin TOPO US 24K Northeast Map (DVD) Review

Garmin TOPO US 24K Northeast Map (DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This software does what it's supposed to do, i.e., it works with the Garmin Handheld GPS I bought. The streets and landmarks are accurate, as far as I can tell. And that's what I expected, from what I read from others' reviews of Garmin GPS units and Garmin software. However, it still doesn't do what I really want it to do, which is to allow me to superimpose hiking trails from either a paper map or a .pdf or .jpg file into the software and then trace the trails into the .gpx file. So, in addition to the money I shelled out for the GPS unit and the topo software, I also had to buy a third-party software to allow me to do exactly what I wanted. You'd think that a GPS unit intended for hiking would allow its buyer to do this task, but it doesn't.

Garmin MapSource TOPO US 24k Southwest Topographic Coverage of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico (DVD) Review

Garmin MapSource TOPO US 24k Southwest Topographic Coverage of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico (DVD)
Average Reviews:

Pros:
Route-able Roads and Trails
24K Topo Detail
Cons:
Dark Colors and Poor Contrast
Missing Trails
Trails aren't named
No BLM or State Lands
My comments are limited to Colorado and I'm comparing the Garmin maps to another 24K topo set by Above the Timber. On a recent 3-day backpack I used the Above the Timber maps 95% of the time, Garmin 5%, readability was the key. The good news, both map sets reside inside my Garmin GPS and switching is a breeze.
In my opinion a 24K Topo is a back country map used for foot, horse or other slow travel. This map set combines the excellent route-able Navteq highways and also route-able trails, that's slick. However due to an overly dark set of color choices, it's very difficult to see the trails to make an intelligent trip and/or route selection. Having the routing engine choose your route based on time or distance misses the human dynamic of most scenic. Not seen a routing engine that knows my scenic values . . . it'll happen someday.
The Garmin maps do not show BLM or state lands, a very big deal in Colorado. Also the trails lack either names and/or numbers, kind of like having a highway map w/o names or numbers, huh? Names and/or numbers give you valuable clues as to where you're going, which you verify with occasional sign posts.
To understand my colors and contrast comment, you'll have to view the attached Nuvi screenshots. They're fuzzy, the Amazon import did that and I'm not sure why.

Garmin MapSource TOPO US 24k West Topographic Coverage for Washington, Oregon, California, and Nevada (DVD) Review

Garmin MapSource TOPO US 24k West Topographic Coverage for Washington, Oregon, California, and Nevada (DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll cut to the bottom line: As far as I can see, this is the best topographic mapping product available.
It's better than computer maps from DeLorme, National Geographic or other vendors, and much better than Garmin's earlier "MapSource" product. Maps displayed on one's PC or Mac (I've tried it on a Mac) are visually compelling, with very high resolution and near-perfect accuracy. There is also an excellent user interface -- you can browse, zoom, rotate or tilt to your heart's content. Even better, these high-resolution maps (unlike anything from other vendors) can be downloaded directly into your Garmin handheld. Most recent Garmin models are supported.
Today while out hiking I was astonished at the detail and resolution on my handheld -- 40 ft topo lines make a enormous difference when deciding whether the hill in front of you is a mountain or a molehill.
The only downside I have noticed is that there aren't very many hiking trails indicated on the maps. But it's always a good idea to obtain a local trail map if one is available. Drivable roads near where I live are all there, and as far as I can see there are no errors of labeling or placement. This is a big relief, because some other products I have seen are loaded with errors.
P.S. (7 Aug 2010). With some recent software fixes (both to my Garmin 60 Csx firmware, and also updates to the "BaseCamp" and "MapInstall" software, I have been able to download almost the entire mapset (California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington), except for a few panes in eastern Nevada, onto a single 4 Gbyte microSD HD card in my Garmin 60 Csx handheld. It works wonderfully. How did I ever live without it?
