(More customer reviews)I bought this by chance. I was looking for just a basic model to get my feet wet in the world of hand-held GPS's, so I did my research and decided to buy an eTrex H. Unfortunately, brand new, out of the box, it couldn't find any satellites (bad unit). So when I returned it, I decided to try the Triton 200. I was a bit concerned considering the negative reviews, but... what the hey? I could return it, also.
Well, what a pleasant surprise! For $20 more, I had a color screen, base map, great functionality, SiRF chipset, high-sensitivity GPS receiver, PC connectivity (my Triton 200 came with the USB cord), etc. When I turned it on, whammo! Magellan Triton 400 Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

Do yourself a favor. Do a quick online search and find all of the bad reviews for this product. They are all accurate.
These are just some of the bugs I have personally experienced:
- frequent lock ups, operating system crashes. See "Fatal error OutdoorNav.exe".
- cannot store more than 100 geocaches/waypoints without seizing up.
- odometer indicates 180% of actual mileage logged.
I can only think of a few pros for this product:
- satellite acquisition is good, even indoors.
- color screens are nice.
- it's inexpensive compared to other brands with similar features (although these advertised features don't actually work).
You are on your own if you buy this product and experience difficulties. Magellan has extremely poor customer support. Telephone support is outsourced and ignorant of the product's features. Online support is vague and slow to respond.
Retailers (including REI) have pulled the Triton line from their shelves.
Save yourself the hassle and check out other GPS units, such as Magellan's eXplorist line or Garmin's units. I did, and exchanged the Triton 400 for a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx. The evidence is overwhelming -- look elsewhere.

Magellan Triton 300 Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

The good:
Quick to power up and initialize.
Rugged construction and feel of case.
Clear bright screen.
Navigation fairly easy and intuitive.
Good battery life.
Compatible with National Geographic 1:24000 maps
The bad:
User manual is incomplete leaving out a lot of necessary information. Some of the information is just plain incorrect and unit will not function if directions are followed.
Unit locks up (every time) after connecting to TOPO! and Vantage Point (Magellan's software) requiring a battery to be pulled out to reset the unit.
Approximately 15-25 times in the twenty hours, upon pressing a key the unit would lock up. A continuous sound would emit as if the key was being held down. The only alternative was to pull the batteries out to restart.
Magellan tech support (India) claimed they would have one of their Senior members call be back within the hour to help with some issues. 20 days later....still no call.
Much difficulty connecting for map and waypoint transfers.
Overall Impression:
A ton of aggravation I could have done without!It is very obvious Magellan rushed product rollout despite tons of bugs in the software and inadequate documentation(Manual).
Recommendation: Unless you love frustration, wait for them to work out the bugs.

Magellan Triton 1500 Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

(More customer reviews)OK, so I try to avoid being an early adopter, but I've been waiting a long time for the next step in GPS technology, so I jumped at the chance of buying a Triton 1500.
FYI, the 1500 is the same as the 2000 minus the camera. I carry a Canon on top of my pack so I did not need it.
The User Interface rocks, totally intuitive, easy to understand and the touch screen is awesome. I laugh a little at the micro stylus, that's going to get lost on the first 5 miles on the trail. Magellan includes a bag of extras, probably because they exepect this to happen. Good news is that a finger or a twig will do just fine.
The ability to add voice notes is great and one of the reasons I bought it. You'll need to add an SD card to take advantage of this excellent feature. Same deal if you want to add some MP3s. I can see myself listening to Dave M or a good book on tape while in camp.
The LED flashlight is ok. Enough for an emergency but it will not replace my head torch.
I'm not sure about the choice of colours, I'm sure its rugged but it looks a little cheap.
The cicular navigation button offers too much resistance. Maybe it's designed that way to avoid unwanted data entry, but I don't like it.
Now onto the not so good. The software/PC set up is far from plug and play. In fact I'd go as far to say I've never seen anything so complicated.
The biggest selling feature is the integration with National Geographic's Topo maps. In order to take advantage of this feature you have to sign up for and download Magellan's VantagePoint. If you don't do that you don't get the drivers.
Once you have done this you have to download a patch for the NG maps that adds Triton support. This also provides more of the drivers you need for your PC to recognize the Triton via a USB port.
I've done all the steps above, achieved connectivity with VantagePoint and my Triton, but I have tried everything execept voodoo magic and I cannot get NG Topo maps to see my Triton. This raises a good point.
Magellan make the GPS but NG make the maps, who do I contact for support?
I emailed both Magellan an NG for help. Got some very responsive support from NG but all they could do was refer my email to their development team and I have yet to hear anything from them. Magellan have yet to respond in any way.
I'm sure this problem will get resolved soon and as Colorado is sitting under piles of white stuff I will not be needing my GPS until the spring but it's more than enough to take the shine off a great product.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this unit hoping to download maps from NG's TOPO. Unfortunately, this unit doesn't work with Macs--at least not yet. And no word as to when (if ever) it will. So if you're using a Mac you might want to hold off or look elsewhere.
Physically, the unit feels solid enough--except for the battery cover, which is cheap plastic and does not close flush with the unit itself, leaving a noticeable gap that you can see and feel. I don't think this compromises the unit since there is an inner gasket that actually does the (IPX-7) waterproofing.
You'd think Magellan would know what the SD card size limit is for their own product. On their Website they mention 2 GB as a general limit for all their products. In fact I'm using a 4 GB card with no issues. Well... One issue is that the unit will not tell you how large the card is or how much free space the card has. The associated PC-only software will tell you, but the unit really ought to provide this basic information on its own.
Speaking of which, there is a serious lack of options on the Magellan, especially if you're used to using a Garmin. The Triton's user interface is really sparse, and it's not simply because options are hidden; options simply aren't there. The Garmin eTrex, for example, must have ten times as many screens, each with its own set of sub-menus. Heck there are even games. With the Triton, you don't even get an alarm clock. There is way too much dependence on the associated PC-only software to do simple things like delete files from the SD card.
Those of you thinking you'll be able to transfer an entire state map to the unit should think again. Despite having more than enough room to accommodate such a map, I get errors every time I try. 200 MB maps seem to be the limit so far.
You can only activate one TOPO map at a time. So if you're driving through various areas that you happen to have maps for, you'll have to manually switch to them as needed. The obvious solution is to transfer the entire USA as one map--but of course you can't do that.
Another incredibly annoying and pointless limitation: if you're using the unit "offline" to study some map, or to look ahead to see what's coming, the unit will automatically return you to its last known position after an extremely short duration of inactivity. This makes it impossible to plan ahead or to use the unit as a digital map. What should happen is that the unit should show you what you want to see for as long as you want to see it--just like the Garmin units. When you're done browsing, the ESC button should return you to the last known position. As it stands, Magellan has crippled the Triton with a pointless and annoying viewing time limit.
Personally, I prefer the vector-based maps that Garmin uses to the raster-based TOPO maps. With vector-based maps you have more control over which map elements you want to see. For example, if you only want to see contour lines then don't view the place-names. With raster you have no such options, since the unit has no idea what information the TOPO map is conveying; it merely takes the raster image and overlays its own vector basemap information. On the other hand, Garmin's vector-based maps are not as detailed as the TOPO maps (not yet, anyway). The Triton series would be so much more compelling if you could use any digitized maps and not merely TOPO's.
Overall, the lack of Mac support, the lack of options, and the annoying usage limitations suggests that they rushed this out the factory door before it was ready. Hopefully firmware updates will address most of these flaws in time.
