TomTom One XL ClearTouch Anti-Glare Screen Protector (Single Pack) Review

TomTom One XL ClearTouch Anti-Glare Screen Protector (Single Pack)
Average Reviews:

It came packaged with a little card-like applicator. The applicator is supposed to help smooth out trapped air between the adhesive and the screen. It seemed that although I used the applicator, there were always trapped air bubbles. The corners also donn't adhere as well as I thought. It does help eliminate glare, and having it on there is better than nothing all.

TomTom PDA Navigator 6 U.S./Canada Map microSD Card Review

TomTom PDA Navigator 6 U.S./Canada Map microSD Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a Samsung SCH i830 phone running the Microsoft Pocket PC operating system. I plugged in the SD card and the software installed without a hitch. The TomTom software is easy to use and the tracking and mapping with the GPS is excellent! The one interesting thing, but not any issue, is that the software, having come from the UK, uses terms like "motorway" as opposed to highway. The company also provide interesting add-ons such as voices, weather and traffic ... but I haven't tried them since the base system was robust enough for my needs. I would recommend this product for any PDA-type cell phone that is supported.

Tom Tom Plus is an optional, cost-based service that can be accessed through Navigator 6 at any time.
The receiver that is included in the Tom Tom Navigator 6 package utilizes Bluetooth technology to eliminate the need for connecting cables, and a high-performance GPS antenna to ensure the best possible reception wherever you might happen to go. Ideal for urban environments, the GPS antenna on this unit will stay connected to make sure you find your way whether you are driving down the road or walking down the street, and because of its Bluetooth connectivity, and its small size and light weight, this handy receiver can fit easily in a pocket, purse, or anywhere else out of the way.

I thought this would include a interface to connect directly to my old TomTom 910. The mount I have for that TomTom will not charge it. Turns out it was just a plug in to a car lighter and a plug into the mount that I already have that does not work. It is not worth my time to send it back so it will be thrown into the drawer with all the other useless power cords I have that serve no purpose.

Garmin Refurbished Nuvi 5000 Portable Car Navigation System - Silver Review

Garmin Refurbished Nuvi 5000 Portable Car Navigation System - Silver
Average Reviews:

Review for Garmin 5000
What's wrong with this product? Let me count the ways... Every time you stop the car, the device shuts down (no internal battery). When the car is started again, the Garmin takes a full three minutes to reboot & reacquire satellites. BOO! Additionally, when you wish to enter a destination, you start from scratch every time. You have to spell the city, provide the street number, and spell the street name. TomTom at least displays a list of previously used destinations that you can reselect if you want. The Garmin method is far more time consuming. BOO! Finally, the feature that prompted me to buy the Garmin in the first place (routing) doesn't work well. Even using "route optimization," the Garmin wants to drive you around the world to get to the destinations you've entered. It does NOT select the most efficient route, and if you miss or skip a single destination, the Garmin gets lost & goes crazy. BOO!
Overall, this product was a massive waste of money. The TomTom One that I have works significantly better. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!

I did not keep this item as I found out that, though blue-tooth enabled, it could not be upgraded for other blue tooth telephones and only could work with only one telephone model. HQRP Battery for TomTom One XL / V1 / V2 / V3 GPS Replacement plus HQRP Universal Screen Protector Review

HQRP Battery for TomTom One XL / V1 / V2 / V3 GPS Replacement plus HQRP Universal Screen Protector
Average Reviews:

After a number of years of faithful service our TomTom One battery gave out. I purchased this battery for a very reasonable price however I felt the shipping charges were a tad bit high. It is actually just a bit smaller than the battery it replaces. The packaging indicates that it is intended for use in a PDA. The connector is compatible and plugs right in. The rating on this Lithium Ion battery is 1300 mHr exceeding the 1100 mHr battery that came with the unit. There were no markings indicating the composition of the old battery but I do not believe it was a Lithium Ion Battery. It came about 50% charged and unless it does not come up to a full charge (which I do not believe will happen) I am very pleased with this unit. I hope this will help.

Magellan Roadmate 2200T 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Review

Magellan Roadmate 2200T 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This device works great. It is a fantastic bargain. It picks up satellites quickly even indoors. The voice system which tells you in advance to expect a turn, what street to turn on, and then signals exactly when to make the turn, is incredible.
The menu system is fairly easy to learn and use. And it has numerous built in shortcuts like remembering previous addresses, and cities, and streets, and figuring out and listing possible street names once you type a few letters. The touch screen is easy to use (once you learn a few tricks, listed below). If you go off course it quickly calculates a new route for you.
Some caveats:
1) Don't expect to be able to read or make changes while this is installed in your car. It would be too distracting to look at while driving, or try to enter information while driving, so its better to just listen for instructions rather than try to follow the visual map.
2) Google the Magellan page to print out a users manual, and read it before you try to use this unit.
3) You have to get used to the instructions. The voice in the machine, tells you you are approaching a turn. That does NOT mean turn at the next intersection. It means be prepared to turn so you can turn when the GPS sounds a tone indicating you have arrived at the intersection to turn at. Unless you realize this you will make a lot of premature turns.
Also it sometimes tells you to continue in _x miles. For example "continue on US101 in .5 miles." Since you are already on US 101 you may wonder why it says that. What you will discover is that in .5 miles the road divides or there is a major exit that you do NOT take. That's why it says continue. The message continue alters you that --even though there is no turn off for you to take --you need to be alert to NOT accidentally take the wrong branch.
4) The touch screen is very sensative to exactly where you touch. For example, if you are on the map page, and want to go to the menu screen you must touch exactly on the highlighed part with the words "menu". If you tough the screen a little bit too high or too the left, you will simply adust the map and get another map screen and wonder why the GPS doesn't seem to work. There is no problem when you touch the exact right areas, but you do have to be exact. With a little practice at home you can learn to use the touch screen without a problem. If you do make a mistake its easy to correct once you realize that the problem is the need to touch the screen in the exact right place.
5) If you hit too many keys too rapidly its possible to freeze the unit.
This is not easy to do, but I did this once when I put it into sleep mode from which I couldn't get it to awake. This is like your computer locking up. Fortunately the solution is simple: Just move the reset button back to off and then back to on-- and your unit will unfreeze and you can turn it on and use it. Your stored data won't be lost. The unit froze only once, but it was good to know the problem could be fixed simply.
6) The unit has feature for photos and music which I haven't used and probably will never use.
Non of the above caveats are problems. Just hints to make it easier to use.
I have had no problems with the unit, which I bought refurbished from Amazon including a $20 rebate which I sent away for but have not yet received.
My one experience with custommer service at Magallen was good. I got someone from India, who helped mu understand what the real serial number was for the rebate form. The number on the back was hard to read, and appeared different from the serial number on the box (I couldn't tell whether one of the numerals was a 5 or 6-- It turned out one was a 5 and one was a six, but I got thru right away and the person at the customer service desk was very patient and totally helpful.
This unit is frequently compared to the TomTom one, which sells refurbished for about the same price.
This unit in contrast to the TomTom one GPS, tells when you are about to turn what street to turn on--which is important for the obvious reason, that you can look for the name of the street on the street sign in advance and to confirm it is where you need to turn, instead of just depending on a tone. For this reason alone, I'd choose this over the TomTom one.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Magellan Roadmate 2200T 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)

This is a refurbished GPS. Refurbished generally means that the unit has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the navigator back to like new conditions. Some GPS may contain cosmetic blemishes.

If you don't own a car with its own navigation system, and you're tired of looking up destinations on the internet and printing the results--or even worse, stopping to ask for directions--the Magellan 2200T make be just what you're looking for. Its sturdy and easily portable design, simple operation, and multi-function capability make it a great choice for any journey.
Design The Magellan 2200T is compact and solid, making it easy to bring along wherever you go, as well as providing a sense of confidence that it can survive the bumps of bruises that come with the mobile lifestyle. It measures just 3.7 x 2.0 x 0.6 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 7.8 ounces, making it only a little chunkier than your average PDA or Smartphone. The first thing you'll notice on its exterior is almost complete lack of buttons. This is because all interaction with the 2200T happens between the touchscreen and your finger. In the interest of simplicity, there is not even a stylus that can fall to the floor and roll under your the seat of your car. The only button you'll find on the device is the recessed rubber power button on the top right.
All other connections are protected by rubber covers that can be peeled away for access. Below the power button you'll find ports for USB, headphones, and the external power supply. On the left is an SD/MMC card slot, a reset button, and a handy hold button that puts the device in a temporary power-saving mode.
Setup and Interface Setup is as easy as turning the device on, since it comes loaded with maps of the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, and is ready to go right out of the box. We found interacting with the touchscreen to be intuitive and reliable. With this device, there's really no need for a stylus or navigation buttons, which simplifies things on the road. The screen itself is sharp and clear with its 320 x 240 pixel resolution display and support for 64,000 colors. The 2200T comes with a dash or windshield mount, a wall charger, a USB cable, a CD with software for photos and music. Unfortunately, a vehicle charger is not included, however.
The 2200T not only provides audible commands for turns, but is able to indicate street names using a text-to-voice system Magellan calls "SayWhere." We found this to be a very useful feature, especially when attempting to navigate in an unfamiliar city, although some of the street names were difficult to understand, particularly those derived from Spanish.
Navigation The main purpose of any car GPS device is to take you reliably from point A to B. Here the 2200T performs nicely indeed, providing several options for finding your destination. To get going you can select either a street address, a specific point of interest, a destination from the address book, or an intersection (if you're not sure of the exact address). To speed up text entry, the unit employs a QuickSpell feature that displays only the letters that spell an item in its database. This greatly reduces the letters from which you have to choose to tell it where you want to go.
Once it knows where you are headed, the device offers you the choice of shortest time, shortest distance, most use of freeways, or least use of freeways. You'll also find a trip planner that lets you layout and save multiple destinations.
Other Goodies Like a number of other similar devices, the Magellan 2200T also houses an MP3 player and a very nice photo/slide viewer. It's a breeze to drop music files or photos into the folders already located on the included SD card. We found the music player intuitive, with no serious learning curve. You can't listen to tunes and navigate at the same time, however.
The device is also ideal for sharing snapshots of summer vacation with grandma once you make it over the river and through the woods. Colors are crisp and bright, and displaying your photos is idiot-proof for anyone who has ever used a computer or digital camera.
The 2200T is a rugged and functional GPS navigator that is easy to use and reliable. If basic navigation is what you are looking for, and you can do without the bells and whistles of Bluetooth connections and real-time traffic information (although Magellan states that real-time traffic information can be added to the 2200T as an accessory), this could be just the ticket.
Pros
Rugged device with multiple functions and options
Easy to use
Reliable map included on SD card
Includes MP3 Player and Photo Viewer
Cons
Can't listen to MP3 player and navigate at the same time
No bells and whistles

HP iPAQ rx5915 Travel Companion Review

HP iPAQ rx5915 Travel Companion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's a GPS with all the pocket PC features, not a PPC with GPS features. This is a GPS first! It's basically the same as a TomTom One navigation system, but with the added PPC functions. I've had other GPS/PDA/PPC combos in the past and they don't stack up to this one at all!

Lets look at the GPS first:

The map issue that others are having is going to depend on where you live or where you will be using this unit. Try different GPS's software, as they aren't all the same.

Personally, I like the Magellan software for it's "Dings" when approaching a turn, as well as it's "Approaching destination on the left" notifications. TomTom doesn't tell you what side of the street your destination is on, except for the location on the screen (no verbal prompt.) TomTom however has a much better itinerary planning capability than the Magellan, one feature I liked more.

You can load your own custom POI's if you want, but the TomTom POI's are a little lacking. It's not like I found everything in my Magellan either though. It depends on how much you want to rely on the POI's. As an advantage, since this is wifi enabled and has pocket internet explorer, you can always use the internet to find the POI you are looking for.

The biggest negative I have is with the GPS fix time. It's slow. I mean really slow. Sometimes it can take a few minutes, and if you are already moving it seems to take even longer. Up to several minutes.

I wish one of the buttons was a mute/un-mute button, but it's something I can live without.

The car cradle is the best one I've ever used. It's very easy to mount, and it's even easier to insert the GPS and remove it. Takes no time at all. Since it's powered by mini-usb, this is an added bonus for me, as my cell phone charges on the same connection.

Battery life is excellent, it lasts about 5 hours for my use so far. Enabling wifi or bluetooth will of course lower the battery performance.

Onto the PocketPC functions:
As a PPC, this thing rocks! With wifi and bluetooth you have every connection you could need. I use the internet on this more than I thought I would. I check my web based email, browse the news headlines, watch streaming video and listen to online music. It's got a few hundred megs of extra space for MP3's if you want, but I use my ipod for my mp3 listening. I also use this to store my photos. I have a phone that runs pocket windows as well, and with it's camera I can take a photo and send it via bluetooth to the PPC and add a contact in no time!

Pocket Internet Explorer doesn't always work for me. I like the Opera browser more (free 30 day trial) but I've found a few sites that wouldn't work in Opera, or looked better in Pocket IE.

It came down to this or a Magellan 3050T GPS system. I chose this because it's smaller, lighter, and has a ton of options over a stand-alone GPS. You can't compare this to a stand alone GPS because it's not. It has many more options that you may or may not use. If you are considering buying a TomTom One GPS, then get this instead. It's about the same price, runs the exact same software (TomTom 6.0) and has all the PDA features in a smaller package.

I hope this was helpful, but in the end it depends on what your looking for. I travel a lot, and needed something that had all the maps built in, was small enough to take on my carry on, could travel with me and was easy to use. I think I've found it in this unit. Just try and take one of the stand alone GPS's and casually put it in your pocket, good luck getting it out!Additional Information:
TomTom and HP are currently working on an updated map release for this product and will (hopefully) have it available on the HP support website by the end of January. TomTom is hailing this update as "The most detailed and accurate maps of the US and Canada ever produced.." This update will also be free to owners of the RX5900 series Travel Companions.
Update 02/08/07:
HP Hasn't released an updated map pack yet, however they did release a firmware update for the unit. This update improves the GPS functionality and accuracy. I now get GPS locks in seconds, where it used to take minutes. While driving, I get a lock in 10 seconds. I get a lock faster if I'm stopped. It is definitely a significant improvement and I recommend everyone that owns one of these updates the firmware.

Pharos Drive 135 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Pharos Drive 135 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used this gps for about 1 month. As far as now, I have big trouble with this product.Maybe I am just not smart enough to use it.There are several problems.
First: sometimes it will spend a lot of time to lock on the satellite signal, > 1 min.
Second: the processor is really slow. very hard to tolerate.
Third: the database of Point of Interest is too small, I even cannot find a nearby Walmart through this gps.
Fourth: the voice system is bad.
I am not able to use any other service from this gps other than the "follow me up" function.
I DO NOT recommend anybody to buy this product.

TomTom PDA Navigator 6 U.S./Canada Map DVD (Windows or Mac) Review

TomTom PDA Navigator 6 U.S./Canada Map DVD (Windows or Mac)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are two very negative customer reviews for the TomTom Navigator 6 software as of this writing, and for my first few hours' experience with the product I could understand why. The "quickstart guide" they bundle with the DVD is all the documentation you get, and there is little or no documentation specific to the dozens of devices they support with this release (in my case, a Nokia E61 Symbian Series 60 smartphone paired with the Holux GPSlim 240 bluetooth GPS receiver).
However, for those early adopters who are very comfortable with gadgetry and computing this is an unparalleled offering. First of all, there is no comparable software out there in terms of device support. Navigator 6 supports Palm OS, Windows Mobile, and Symbian UIQ & Series 60. Garmin's Mobile XT is the closest competitor and its Symbian support seems to be vaporware, just like their support for Mac OS X.
Speaking of Mac OS X, TomTom is the only GPS software vendor with a Mac client app for interacting with your device, something Garmin has been promising for more than a year and are only now beginning to deliver on for their personal fitness devices alone. TomTom Home was clearly not developed with the Mac in mind--a direct port of the Windows version as far as I can tell--but I give them credit for recognizing that the early adopters that are into GPS and mapping software are more likely than most to be using a Mac. Some of the bugs I found in the Mac app were very serious though: the backup tool for archiving your device memory is totally broken and fails very subtly to the user (i.e. I didn't know it had failed until I needed the backup and it was nowhere to be found). Also, for you Symbian users: be very careful that you choose the right version of the app for your device. I mistakenly chose Symbian UIQ instead of Symbian Series 60, which led to hours of removing installed files by hand to get the right version to eventually install correctly, something I could have avoided if the Mac software didn't have a bug that prevented it from cleanly removing the app from my Nokia E61 for me.
As for the navigator itself, it works like a champ. The map data seems to be far better than what was available on my previous GPS device (Garmin Quest 2), although it isn't without its quirks. For example, on a recent trip the voice navigation kept directing me to "keep left" on a stretch of highway that gently curves left, despite there being no offramp or other road affordance to deter me from keeping left. But it got me to an unfamiliar destination without getting lost, in an area of town where the Garmin often stumbled. The points of interest data seems extensive and up-to-date, getting me to a small barber shop that's been open for less than a year, and letting me call ahead to the current phone number to get on the waiting list.
After a couple of days of heavy use of the navigation app and map data, it has almost made up for the crucible that was getting it to properly install. Despite the initial pain, I'm very happy with the product. Again, I can only speak for the quality of the product on my Nokia E61 and Mac, and based on the blisteringly negative reviews from Windows Mobile users, your mileage may certainly vary.

Designed to be ultimately safe, Navigator 6 software provides for easy call handling for PDAs with calling functionality, with on-screen instructions that remain visible while making phone calls or receiving SMS messages, as well as the ability to dial a point of interest. The navigation system not only encourages you to get from A to B as safely as possible, but alerts you to when you are speeding, even if you are not in navigation mode. The TomTom Navigator 6 software is compatible with most popular brands and models of PDAs, including; Acer, Dell, Eten, Fujitsu Siemens, HP, Imate, O2, Orange, Palm Treo, Qtek, T-Mobile, and Nokia.
